Our house dates from about 1840 and overlooks the village green in Skirling. A small and picturesque conservation village in the Scottish Borders. Originally the village school, the house is now a spacious and comfortable family home. You will be the only guests as we only have one guest bedroom and bathroom available. The main door of the house opens into the hallway leading to the guest bedroom and other family bedrooms. The double bedroom is at the rear of the house looking out to the garden. It is on the ground floor. There is a king size bed with feather and down duvet and pillows with white bed linen. There is no TV in the bedrooms. The bathroom has an electric shower, wash hand basin, WC and heated towel rail. It is NOT EN-SUITE but is private to you during your stay, we as a family do not use this bathroom. It is located close to the bedroom via a glass panelled door from the main hallway. There is a small step from the hallway into the back corridor leading to the shower room and there is a step up into the shower cubicle. Again the shower room is at the rear of the house with a window looking out on to the garden. The bedroom has a small chest of drawers and hanging space on hooks/hangers behind the door in the bedroom and there is space for coats and suitcases in the corridor leading to the bathroom. There is a hairdryer in the chest of drawers. A kettle is provided in the bedroom for making your own coffee and tea, fresh milk will be provided, no plastic and no fiddly little pots. Homemade biscuits too! Breakfast is taken in our large, bright kitchen, the old schoolroom. If you have special dietary requirements, allergies or intolerances then please let me know in advance and, where possible, we will try and accommodate most requests. For breakfast there is a choice of freshly prepared fruit, natural yogurt, a selection of cereals, eggs from our hens (when they decide to co-operate), homemade bread for toast and homemade jams and marmalade. Breakfast is available until 8..30am and earlier if required! Private parking is located outside the house close to the front door accessed via a gravelled path. We have storage space for bicycles. As I work outside in the garden and quite often away from home I would ask you to let me know what time you will arrive so that I can make sure I’m here to welcome you and show you where everything is. Skirling is a friendly conservation village in the Scottish Borders on the border with South Lanarkshire. We are well placed as a stopping off point to break your journey being 20 minutes drive from the M74 (M6) and about 45 minutes from the Edinburgh City Bypass (routes north and east) There is so much to see and do using Skirling as a base. If you need some ideas please ask. We are close to Traquair, Scotland's oldest inhabited house, New Lanark World Heritage Site, Jupiter Artland an award winning contemporary sculpture garden, Little Sparta, Dawyck Botanic Garden, Floors Castle and Rosslyn Chapel (for Dan Brown fans) to name but a few places to visit using The Schoolhouse as a base. You should check opening hours and any COVID-19 restrictions. Edinburgh is easily accessible with a direct bus from Biggar or P&R at Straiton. Biggar is our local town, "London's big but Biggar's Biggar" as the saying goes. There are places to eat, a local museum, golf club and the annual Hogmanay Bonfire which attracts crowds from all over. Travelling around the area by car is easy, taking a gentle pace you will be enthralled by the breathtaking scenery that the Scottish Borders has to offer. Gently rolling hills with lush green fields. The odd tractor might slow you down but you're on holiday, take it easy. If you do want to enjoy the hustle and bustle and major tourist attractions in Edinburgh, Biggar has a bus service into central Edinburgh, great to avoid parking charges and trying to find that elusive parking space. There is also a P&R service into Edinburgh from Straiton which is about 45 minutes drive, depending on the time of day. If you fancy a trip into Glasgow then head to Lanark to catch a regular train. Schoolhouse Flowers is my seasonal cut flower business so you might see me in the garden picking flowers, depending on the season. Your privacy will not be compromised. You are of course welcome to wander around the garden and I'm always happy to talk about flowers! Our small family dog is normally at my side and will be very happy to say hello to you. He is very friendly. He is not allowed to roam the house and most definitely not allowed in bedrooms.
