Beautiful cottage in stunning secluded valley
Set in a stunning private valley on the edge of the vibrant market town of Westerham, Kent, inside there is cosy comfort, a wood burning stove and a wet room; outside, you are close to historic houses and places of interest, just 21 miles from central London. ***We only accept guests who have already been reviewed by other Airbnb hosts.*** *** Children are welcome, by prior arrangement. The sofa in the living room can accommodate two children, giving the cottage a total capacity of two adults and two children. (There is a small extra charge for linen if the sofa bed is used). *** Cutmill Cottage enjoys a secluded position in 35 acres of undulating parkland, pasture, woodland, lakes and rivers, in stunning landscape that was laid out by the famous 18th century landscape architect, Lancelot (Capability) Brown. His influences are seen in the remaining open parkland and woods that contain remnants of water fountains, lakes, a natural spring and a derelict water wheel. Now, in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the valley is home to a flock of Portland rare breed sheep, ducks, hens, pigs, bees and a black Labrador. Beyond this pastoral scene, London Gatwick airport is 25 minutes away, the Channel Tunnel is just over 1 hour away and two nearby train stations can take you to London in 30 to 40 minutes. There is a lot to see and do in the area within close range – see below for full details. A comprehensive information pack and details on the area are provided in your cottage. The cottage offers a double bedroom with king sized bed, a living room with kitchen area and a contemporary wet room with under floor heating, a heated towel rail and toiletries. Bed linen and towels are provided. There is a large screen television with Free Sat tv, a radio, Wifi and a wood burning stove. The cottage has a high table with two matching stools to dine at. The kitchen has a fridge, freezer, oven, two cooker rings and a microwave oven. On sunny days, fold back the sliding glass doors and you have a wonderful garden room to enjoy and a grandstand view of the valley. There is plenty of parking right by the cottage. We have lock up space for bike storage. Well-behaved and non-aggressive dogs are permitted by prior arrangement, but not during lambing due to the proximity of the cottage to pregnant and nursing ewes and lambs. Dogs are not allowed on the furniture. Tea and coffee making facilities are already in your cottage. A welcome pack of breakfast essentials can also be arranged at a charge to include eggs, bacon and sausages, cereal, bread etc. Guests have full private use of the cottage and full access to the 35 acre valley, its lakes and woods. We live in the house some 30 metres away and are delighted to give you guidance on local places of interest, paths for beautiful walking and where to eat and drink. Recorded in the Domesday Book as Ouisterham, Westerham has been home to many famous people, among them Sir Winston Churchill and General James Wolfe of Quebec, who are both commemorated by prominent statues on the green in Westerham. Other former residents of Westerham include Alice Liddell of “Alice in Wonderland” fame and Sir Francis Younghusband, the 19th century explorer. Sir Winston's home Chartwell, one of the National Trust's most visited properties, is just over two miles away and Down House, the home of Charles Darwin, is just seven miles north. Hever Castle, home of Anne Bolyen, is eight miles away. General Wolfe’s childhood home, Quebec House, is in Westerham and Knole House and Park, reputedly a calendar house and once an archbishop’s palace, is seven miles away in Sevenoaks. Westerham is a well-known centre for cyclists and walkers with many miles of beautiful marked paths through undulating wooded hills. Today, Westerham is a busy and vibrant market town with restaurants and independent shops centred around the green. The town attracts many visitors for its excellent restaurants and pubs and you can take your pick from its restaurants offering excellent French, Italian, Chinese and Indian food among others. We would be delighted to give you guidance on how to get around and can give you details of local taxi companies. A car is necessary for your visit to Cutmill Cottage. There is a smoke detector and fire extinguisher in the cottage. There is fine walking in the area as well as two long distance footpaths - the North Downs Way and the Greensand Way, both of which pass very close to Westerham.
