The Little House on Locket's Meadow
The Little House has one bedroom with a queen bed and a sleeping loft with a queen. The kitchen is fully equipped. House is dog-friendly with a fenced yard. It's country, yet 7.5 miles to New Haven, 25 minutes to Milford beaches. Visit with 140 animals, including horses, pigs, sheep, goats, llamas. These are the animals of Kathleen M. Schurman's books; meet many of the characters she writes about. Kathleen's a medium and animal communicator, and readings can be scheduled with enough notice. The Little House is recognized as an antique house in Bethany's Old Houses and Community Buildings. The original part of the house is thought to be between 175 and 225 years old, but it was such a small house it seems there was little reason to list it in town documents. It may be small but it's open, charming and comfortable. Bottled water is always in the fridge and we leave a jar of the farm's homemade pasta sauce on the counter (with both regular and gluten-free pasta) for hungry guests who arrive late. We make muffins early each morning (gluten free and vegan) and if guests are interested, I am happy to leave some in the mudroom before chores. During the summer we have an excess of eggs from our rescued yard birds and we are happy to put some in the fridge for you if you would like some (hen, duck, goose and yes, peacock!) August and September is tomato season for us as we grow tons of heirlooms. You are welcome to help yourself from the gardens, and if you are lucky you will arrive on a sauce-making day (we have a LOT of sauce making days.) And this is at the request of many of our guests - you don't have to come here to eat the muffins (although we are happy to have your company!) Here's how you can make them yourself at home . . . Airbnb won't let us post a URL, but . . . go to Youtube and search Meemaw's Too Tasty Muffins and the recipe/method is yours to make, share, whatever. The farm is nearly 15 acres and guests are welcome to stroll around and visit with our many rescues. We ask that you do not open any gates or stall doors unless one of us with you and has given permission. Remember that the other houses on the property belong to family members, some of them with young children who nap, so please be respectful and allow them space. We are happy to give tours upon request, and those guests who would like to jump in and help with chores, etc., just let us know and we would be happy to allow the full "farm experience!" Also, if you would like a riding lesson, we could add that on, as well. We live on the property so we are always available to answer questions or show you around (based around chores and feeding times, of course.) You can participate in farm activities as much or as little as you care to. Note: we are farmers and keep farmers' hours, which means we are early to bed and VERY early to rise. If you are arriving late, just let us know and we will make arrangements to get you in the door. Bethany's motto is "Rural is Beautiful." We have a few diners, a bank and a nice, new gas station with diesel fuel (which was the talk of the town when it was approved by P&Z.) This is where you come to stroll country roads or bike on serious hills. It's not quiet - I can't describe the sound that pigs and burros make at feeding time, and there is often the hum of chain saws in the background. Still, it's peaceful and conducive to writing, thinking and meditating. The animals are friendly as are the residents, and you will leave feeling refreshed. Plenty of parking, no public transportation unless you include Uber. If you are planning to cook your own meals while here and have forgotten a spice, just let me know. I'm a cook, so we are pretty well stocked in the kitchen. If you plan to eat out, Billy's is right around the corner and we highly recommend them. Also, New Haven is only 20 minutes away, and has a huge selection of excellent restaurants. NOTE: The bathroom was completely renovated in 2013. However, our well water is high in iron and despite regularly changing the pump filter, flushing, etc., the tub has discolored and has pale stripes in the white fiberglass. This is country living . . . You dig a hole for water and you work with what you get. (The water is tested for safety regularly, and it is fine to drink, however we keep plenty of bottled water in the fridge for those who prefer it.) The bathtub and toilet are clean, however, and scrubbed with a vengeance after each guest leaves. I personally vouch for the amazing abilities of Mr. Clean Magic Erase which has worked better than any other scrubber/cleaner I have tried! But alas, I can't bring myself to replace an almost new tub in the guest house before I finally get a new tub to replace my original 1950s tub in my own little house. Which is beige. I despise beige . . . NOTE: The bathroom was completely renovated in 2013.
