Old School Mews

Old School Mews is a beautiful period school house located in a quiet village location just outside of Nottingham. Easily located from the A1 and A46 with public transport links via bus or train to and from Nottingham City and Newark. Centrally situated for the Derbyshire Peak District and Sherwood Forest, Old School Mews was formerly the Victorian school house in Lowdham, a quiet community, close to Nottingham and Newark. Belvoir Castle, which is open to the public, is close by. Each room features original wooden beams and is beautifully decorated. In room facilities include tea and coffee making facilities, television, towelling robes and wardrobes. Wireless internet is also available. The Headmasters room (Double) includes an en suite bathroom, while the Boys Dormitory (Twin) and Girls Room (Single) have use of a master bathroom. A choice of full English or continental breakfast is available served in our large country dining kitchen. Our guests will find their rooms equipped with televisions, radio alarms and tea and coffee making facilities. Guests have access to our large country kitchen and are welcome to relax in either the courtyard at the rear of the property or in the front garden at their leisure. Old School Mews is managed by a father and son team. The accommodation was previously run by Mrs Joy Turnell who sadly passed away in October 2016. As such, there will always be someone available to take care of our guests during their stay. We have pets living on the property and understand that guests may prefer to visit with their furry friends. We welcome your pets by arrangement with a small supplement to cover additional cleaning costs. We are happy to look after your pet should the need arise. Please ask us in advance if you require this. Old School Mews was built as an Anglican school in 1843 to house a hundred pupils. Since that time many hundreds of people have passed through these doors. With the passage of time, the school became outdated and was resited a short distance along Main Street where it still is today. Lowdham Parish includes the three townships of Lowdham, Caythorpe and Gunthorpe containing 1578 inhabitants and 2901 acres of land which was enclosed in 1765, when 268 acres were allotted to the Duke of Kingston and 93 acres to the vicar, in lieu of tithes. Lowdham is a pleasant village, situated near to the Dover Beck a tributary of the River Trent and 6 miles to the south-west of Southwell. Lowdham was of the fee of Roger De Busil and later possessed by the Lowdhams who took their name from the village, one of whom later became the High Sheriff of the County. The Parish Church is St Mary’s which is of a neat structure, with a spire and five bells. There are also Wesleyan and Methodist chapels close by. We do hope you enjoy your stay here. Just one more thing, this is a no smoking establishment, if you must please do so outside. Village amenities include a Newsagent, Post Office, convenience store, butchers and Pub. Although there are plenty of hostelries, restaurants and cafes within walking distance of Old School Mews, we would be happy to offer evening meals to our guests with advance arrangement. Additionally, we are delighted to cater for vegetarian or vegan diets. We would, however, ask for at least 24 hours’ notice if this is your requirement.
