Kellaways House Cottage is located in the small village of East Tytherton, Wiltshire close to the nearby market towns of Chippenham and Calne in the north of the county. Its rural setting provides a tranquil atmosphere without being too far from local amenities. The area is popular with walkers and cyclists, but if you want a bit more excitement, it is also perfectly situated to explore places further a feld in Wiltshire, East Somerset and the South Cotswolds. Kellaways Cottage is adjoined to Kellaways House, our family home. The buildings were once part of the Moravian Church, and has had many functions and interesting occupants. Kellaways House was built in 1785 initially as a home for single sisters of the Moravian Church, quickly becoming a girls school a short time afterwards. Educating women in these times was very progressive. The school continued until the outbreak of the Second World War, where it became the temporary headquarters of the Moravian Church in the UK during the Blitz in London. After the War, it soon became a private residence being owned amongst others by modernist artist Richard Smith and perfumer Mr Fidges. Kellaways House Cottage was a later addition to the school in 1830s, originally for the headmistresses as their quarters and study. Although Kellaways house Cottage is adjoined to the main house, it is self-contained and will be sealed off from the main house for the duration of your visit. The cottage has a separate entrance and access to the bedroom and bathroom is via a separate private stairway. Unfortunately because the accommodation is across two floors with steep stairs, it is not suitable for wheelchair access , people with mobility problems or small children. There is ample parking on the large drive at the front of the house. There is also a garage to store bikes if required. Guest are welcome to enjoy the shared house gardens at the rear of the house. As this is our family home, we will most likely be close at hand if you require anything or need assistance. We are always happy to discuss or answer any questions you may have. If you want to relax and have some privacy that is ok too! East Tytherton is a small, friendly village, surrounded by low lying farmland and hills. At the heart of this active community is the village hall and Moravian Church, which hold regular events. It is a popular place to stay for visitors wishing to enjoy the surrounding countryside, either on foot or cycling. It is also strategically placed to explore nearby market towns of Chippenham and Calne. Slightly further afield is the UNESCO city of Bath, the historic prehistoric sites of Wiltshire, and the beauty of the South Cotswolds. Locally we have several good pubs and restaurants in nearby villages, and we are very lucky to have an award winning Maud Heath Vineyard right on our doorstep. East Tytherton has excellent rail and road links with the train station of Chippenham and junction 17 of the M4 motorway a short distance away. There are also regular National Express coaches to Chippenham from London Victoria and Bristol. Due to its rural location, it is recommended to have your own transport. A car is recommended, particularly if you want to explorer the nearby attractions and countryside. The cottage has central heating shared with the main house. Radiators in each room have separate thermostatic valves, but the heating controls are managed centrally. There is a wood burner in the sitting room, please note that whilst three logs will be provided any more logs can be purchased at cost or guests are welcome to get their own logs from the local fuel stations.
