Nelson: a first floor, en-suite bath (with shower hose) double-bedroom in the oldest part of the Walsingham Bakehouse. Dating back to the 1500's, the Old Bakehouse has been welcoming guests to the village for many years and is now under new ownership. This room is suitable to add a mattress or two for extra sleeping accommodation for an infant or children. We have two other rooms at the Old Bakehouse, listed separately on Airbnb as Cavell & Walpole. Both of these are double with shower en-suite. The drawing-room of the Old Bakehouse is our large common room which guests are encouraged to treat as a home-from-home during their stay with us. Weather permitting we will usually have a log fire in the log burner in the evenings. Breakfast is self-service in this bright and sunny room in the mornings - the small-but-perfectly-formed kitchenette is next door and opposite our downstairs loo. We aim to bake home-made bread most days and offer croissants and bagels as well as fruit and yoghurt. If you have special dietary requirements we will try and accommodate your needs - please let us know beforehand. Guests who are staying for a few days may wish to use the kitchenette to cook a simple meal: we have a micro/grill/convection oven, induction hotplate, dishwasher, plus kettle and toaster and fridge. The kitchenette is small - but perfectly formed. The drawing-room dates back to the 1740's, the former bakery room next door is Tudor and the basement under the main room is most likely from the 1480's when the street was laid out: the Georgian part of the building would have been built over the top of the extant foundations. We aim to encourage good conversation and a convivial atmosphere - there's much poetry and music and art going on in the house! The Old Bakehouse is equidistant to the Black Lion and Bull pubs. The Black Lion on Friday Market offers wonderful fine dining and the Bull, decent pub food. The Cafe/restaurant "Victorious" (opposite the War Memorial) is a few minutes walk further away and has excellent, reasonably priced food with big portions. Booking is advised at the Black Lion and Victorious. Epiphany cafe recently opened in the High Street, 3 doors away from The Old Bakehouse. The Anglican Shrine does a take away pizza service in the evenings. The Bull also does a big fry up for 12 pounds or thereabouts. Read and Digest Cafe is 75 yards from The Old Bakehouse front door and has indoor and outdoor seating. We are often at home during the day. Contact us by the landline at night - number supplied on arrival. Otherwise , mobiles during the day if we don’t happen to be in. 50 yards from the front door of the Old Bakehouse are the gates to the "Abbey Grounds", (open 11am-4pm daily) where the "Lonely Arch" stands on the lawn near the original site of the Priory and the Holy House of Our Lady. Destroyed in 1538 by Henry Vlll's men, the Priory was a large religious community that had welcomed pilgrims to the area for hundreds of years. The house that now stands nearby (called Walsingham Abbey) has given its name to the former grounds of the religious community that was headed up by the Prior. Many kings and queens of England had made a pilgrimage to Walsingham since Richeldis de Faverches' 3 visions of Our Lady and the house of the Annunication in 1061. Our Lady had promised Richeldis to give her aid to all who sought her at Walsingham and pilgrims still come to beg her prayers, almost a 1000 years later. The Catholic Shrine is located about a mile outside of the village, a half hour walk along the Holy Mile, or the Pilgrim Way - two different routes to get there. Mass is daily at 12 noon. The Anglican Shrine is located in the village, just around the corner to the Abbey Grounds. There are services daily there and in the Catholic church of the Annunciation, also in the village. Walsingham also enjoys The Bull and The Black Lion pubs, as well as Victorious bistro - book ahead, particularly on the weekend. Lunch and tea are served at Epiphany and Read and Digest, near the Old Bakehouse. Car is the best way to access this part of North Norfolk. The nearest station is King's Lynn (40 mins drive away). Norwich station is approx 50 mins drive away. Buses go from King's Lynn and Norwich to nearby Fakenham, 5 miles away from Walsingham. A bus leaves from Fakenham to Walsingham on the hour for much of the day (journey time 15 mins). Buses leave for Fakenham from Walsingham at roughly 35 mins past the hour. The bus to Fakenham can be caught at either end of the high street. There is good cycling in this area, but Norfolk is not entirely flat: (Noel Coward notwithstanding) - unlike Cambridgeshire or Leicestershire, the real fens. Walsingham is in the valley of the Stiffkey river, a chalk stream that flows on to the coast at Stiffkey village (pronounced Stookey). Parking in Walsingham is at the Mill car park, left at the top of the High Street, opposite the Common Place and the Old Pump. This costs 4 pounds per 24 hours. There is free car parking in the village during the day if you can find it, but easily available free parking in the village from 530pm-930am. Our Jack Russell terrier is good with children. If she doesn’t happen to get on with your dog, she can be kept in a separate part of the house. There is a small gravel yard for late night canine needs. A small lawned area can also be accessed if need be.
