Maywalk House B&B is in Eyam which lies at the heart of the Peak District; the moment you enter you’ll realise you’ve come to a very special place. It may be a small village, but it is full of history and well worth exploring. The Eyam Museum, which is only a few minutes walk down the hill from us, tells the story of how the village was affected by the Bubonic Plague in 1665 after the village tailor received some cloth from the plague-stricken London, which contained plague-carrying fleas. The story tells how villagers suddenly became ill with the plague, which claimed 260 lives (a third of the population) over a 14-month period and describes how the villagers quarantined themselves to stop the disease spreading throughout the county. Many of the cottages where the plague struck still stand today and a number carry commemorative plaques providing information on the victims and their families. An authentic history of those fearful months is vividly told in an exhibition in Eyam Church where a video presentation and talks are also available. There are many good walks directly from the property with fantastic views. Local transport is very limited but there is a bus service 7 days per week. The nearest bus stop is a 5 min walk away. Timetables can be provided in advance if required. The nearest railway stations are in the neighbouring villages of Grindleford and Hathersage, these are only a 10-15 min drive away by car. Taxis are readily available and contact details can be obtained if required. We strongly recommend having your own transport to get the best from your stay with us and visit the Peak District. Breakfast is available to be served in your dining area/kitchen (price included in nightly rate).
