Beautifully Renovated Headmaster's Cottage [#1]
What once was a charming Headmaster's cottage is now a uniquely renovated home, blending original victorian features with modern-day living, located on the edge of the village. The house has beautiful views over its gardens and the countryside beyond, and we'd like to share it with you... as the perfect weekend retreat or mid-week business getaway location — you choose! Room #1: The guest accommodation is a dual-aspect spacious bedroom with a super-king-size bed and an en-suite bathroom with a walk-in shower. A wardrobe and chest of drawers are free to use. A full-sized single bed will be set up if booking for three guests. In our living space, you'll find a wood burner in the lounge, with a ginormous (no exaggeration) bean bag, generally occupied by one or two of the cats. The open-plan kitchen/dining space is truly the heart of our home. It's where we spend most of our time if we're not tending to the vegetables in the kitchen garden or collecting eggs from our flock of friendly hens. Plenty of outside space, where guests can make use of the cosy veranda is set with tables and chairs, festoon lighting and a fire-pit, or find a secluded spot like under the Ash tree. Be warned, if you throw a frisbee for the labrador, you're in it for the long run! There is car parking available, and bikes can be stored in a secure place. Note, we can accommodate six guests in the two generous-sized bedrooms, each with private bathrooms. Please see our other listing for details of Room #2. We offer a continental breakfast (croissants, and cereal) with a coffee and tea facility, plus space in our fridge and microwave. Matfield is at the heart of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Kent. A quintessential village with the prettiest of greens, cricket pitch, duck pond and idyllic Georgian buildings. There's a traditional butcher, with a small delicatessen and grocery selection celebrating local produce, plus two pubs, each uniquely different. Surrounded by rolling fields, woodlands and orchards, we recommend bringing your walking boots to enjoy the stunning countryside. Or cycle instead, with many routes to trial that will take you in and around the surronding villages. Brenchley, either a two-minute drive away or by foot across farmland and orchards, is our neighbouring village. Here you'll find a lovely Tudor church, a tiny Post Office and The Little Bull, a wonderful independent cafe-by-day, bar-by-night. Paddock wood, either by car or bus, has amenities serving all day-to-day needs, including shops, a Waitrose, and a mainline station. Not forgetting the nearby Hop Farm Family Park, which is spread over 400 acres and includes an indoor soft-play area, an animal farm, and endless entertainment options. Tunbridge Wells provides an endless choice of recreational and cultural facilities with parks, theatres, churches, galleries, climbing centres, a steam railway, bars and restaurants, spas, and even England's only dedicated curling ice rink! If you want to do some serious shopping, though, you are spoiled for choice. M&S and Waitrose are within 10 minutes drive. Tunbridge Wells with the popular Pantiles and the town centre is 15 minutes drive. Maidstone with an enormous shopping centre is 20 minutes, Ashford's Designer Outlet is 35 minutes, and Bluewater is 40 minutes away. Other notable attractions nearby are sailing and fishing at Bewl Water, Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest, countless castles and many National Trust attractions. Golf at several interesting courses and fly fishing at Spring Hill Trout Waters. Kent is packed full of interesting and historical places to visit, and Matfield is ideally placed to reach them all. Car We're only minutes from the A21, which provides easy access to the M25 or the south coast. Train The nearest station to get you to London is Paddock Wood, less than 10 minutes away and 42 minutes to London Bridge station, or 30 minutes to Ashford International. Bus Every half hour from the end of the road, to Tunbridge Wells and Paddock Wood Cycle So many choices between recreational, MTB and race routes, two big ones are: Sustrans cycle route 18 will also take you through the broader region with Matfield en-route; and A circular 37.5km cycling route starting and ending in Tunbridge Wells, which will take you through Lamberhurst, Horsmonden and Matfield.
