Welcome aboard our 125 years old twomaster Sea Tjalk HORIZON. Here you can enjoy life on the water in the harbour of the picturesque fortified town of Wijk bij Duurstede: in 2017 by Zoover declared as ‘Most idyllic town in Holland’! If you want to experience authentic Holland in all it’s splendor, this is the place to be! Despite her advanced age, zeetjalk Horizon is a comfortable ship with all the facilities on board you need: a warm and cozy living with a wood-burning stove, a fully aquipped kitchen with dishwasher, oven/microwave and of course a good coffee machine. The ship has a spacious interior with different places to sit and relaxe. You can sit at the bar, or enjoy the fireplace from the couch while watching tv. Or if you rather enjoy the view on the old mill and the lovely white houses along the harbour, then you can take a seat upstairs in the saloon on one of the sofa’s. And of course you can sit outside and when it’s chilly, just wrap one the warm plaids around your shoulders. Horizon houses a wonderful master bedroom with a double bed surrounded by portholes, cupboard/storage spaces and a brand new washbasin for two persons with mirror cabinets. Soap & towels are provided. In the second bedroom there are two separate beds. They are situated in the tip of the boat so they are a bit smaller than avarage beds, so best suited for people up to 1.65 m. In the living you will find a sofa bed. In the blink of an eye, you can turn the sofa into a double bed. The duvet and pillows, et cetera are stored in the sofa. The bathroom is small but practical: there is a shower, a sink, a cabinet with mirrors and the toilet. The whole ship is yours during your stay! We are always available for questions. Just give us a call! After 10 pm you can only reach us for urgent matters. Wijk bij Duurstede is situated at the junction of river the Nederrijn and the Lek. The city has a long history. From thriving trading city, Dorestad, to bishop's city and from fortress city to commuter city. You will find many interesting sights like castle Duurstede, museum Dorestad, a theatre, the Stadshaven, narrow streets with galleries and historic buildings. There is also the cozy Market with shops, the terraces and a big medieval Church. The villages of Cothen and Langbroek are characterised by fruit orchards, extensive nature, river the Kromme Rijn, castles and estates. Something for everyone: the cozy hustle and bustle of the city and the tranquility and space in the villages. The Kromme Rijn region is located at the foot of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug with its beautiful villages such as Langbroek, Maarn, Doorn, Leersum, Driebergen and Amerongen. A very green and wooded area with even some hills! In every season it is beautiful here: from the green budding spring, the warm summer that can be celebrated on the water, the forests that turn yellow, orange and red in the autumn to the white, cozy winters. Many people love this region and like to come here for cycling, walking, shopping, water sports, visiting museums, etcetera. Wijk bij Duurstede is very centrally located. Cities like Utrecht, Amsterdam, Amersfoort, Nijmegen, Gouda, Woerden, The Hague, etc. are all just half an hour to max. an hour away by car. A car would be handy to explore the beautiful region of Wijk bij Duurstede. But with a bike you can also have an absolute wonderful time. For our guests we have two bicycles available free of charge. There are many great cycling and walking routes in the area. You can also easily take the bus from Wijk bij Duurstede to all other destinations or even take the small ferry to Culemborg. Staying on a 125 years old sailboat is quite different than staying in a house on solid ground. It’s a different experience and that’s what makes it so special! All the facilities are there, but you do need to handle things with care. Like the toilet: it works perfectly as long as you do not throw anything else in it but toilet paper. And if you use lots of paper, it would be good to flush 2 times. As for the shower: you are depending on a rather small boiler, so when you are with more persons who want to all shower right after one another, best is to take a quick shower so everyone can enjoy hot water. Or shower with some time in between so the boiler has time to heat up the water. As on every boat or ship, you should take into account that there are steps on and off both inside and outside. So mind your step when you are entering or leaving the ship and also when you are in the ship. It is good to know that when you stay on the Horizon with 6 persons, 2 of them need to sleep on the sofa-bed in the living room. Meaning, in that case you need to turn the sofa into a double bed every night. So for people who mind sleeping in a living room and/or changing the sofa into a bed every night, the Horizon might not be the perfect stay.
