You are warmly welcome to our house in Normandy, France. You will be accommodated in one of the rooms of the old farm that we restored year after year. If you need information to visit the area, we will always be there to give you brochures or advice on the best sites to visit. We can also recommend some great restaurants, crêperies or pizzerias in the area. Welcome to Les Grandes Portes, our family run B&B in the heart of Normandy, France, where you will enjoy a warm, friendly and peaceful atmosphere. Les Grandes Portes is an old farmhouse which we gradually restored in the Cotentin Peninsula. It is very close to Valognes and 15 minutes away from Sainte Mère Eglise, one of the first towns liberated in Normandy in June 1944. Valognes is a lovely town belonging to the "Pays d'Art et d'Histoire" (Arts and History area). This town is referred to as "Le Petit Versailles Normand" (The little Versailles of Normandy), Versailles being the official residence of the Kings of France in the 17th and 18th centuries. You will be accommodated in a quite spacious room equipped with a queen size bed and a single bed, a seating area as well as a small desk, a flat screen television and WiFi access. A shower, a wash basin and toilets are available in a private bathroom decorated with care. For a family of four, a folding baby's bed or a folding single bed can be set in the room. During their stay, our guests should feel free to use the lounge in the mezzanine and its coffee and tea facilities.. Breakfast is served in the dining-room. We propose orange juice, tea, coffee or chocolate, croissant and French baguette or other types of traditional bread, butter, home-made marmelade or jam, fruit, organic yoghurts and cereals, Our garden, with garden furniture, is at your disposal. Children can also use the garden toys (swing, slide, etc) but, at all times, under the supervision of their parents or guardians, as we cannot be held responsible for your children's safety. Do not hesitate to have a look at our other B&B listing in which we offer a room for 2 people with an en-suite bathroom and, if needed, an additional room for children (See B&B Grandes Portes, Normandy, France). You are ideally situated to visit the D-Day landing beaches (Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, Sword), museums and memorials of World War II. If you look for sandy beaches, you will enjoy a trip to Barneville, Carteret, Portbail, or Granville, on the West Coast of the Cotentin Peninsula. These small towns are also renowned for their weekly markets where you can buy local products, If you like the atmosphere of small fishing ports, Barfleur and Saint-Vaast-La-Hougue are definitely on your itinerary! Fishery products are landed from the boats and some of them are immediately sold on the quay. History, architecture enthusiasts have many visits within a few miles to choose from: gothic and norman churches, cathedrals, castles and manors, Roman baths, etc. Many other places of interest or activities are within easy reach of our B&B (30 minutes to one hour by car): - Theme Park "La Cité de la Mer" in Cherbourg - ocean depths, guided tour in a real submarine, Titanic exhibition (30 minutes) - Ile de Tatihou, Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue (30 minutes) - Fierville windmill (30 minutes) - Colleville: American Second World War cemetery, next to Omaha Beach (45 minutes) - Bayeux : British Second World War cemetery, museum, Queen Matilda's tapestry, cathedral (45 minutes) - Caen: city of William the Conqueror, Caen has kept his castle and his two abbeys, remarkable archichectural heritage from the twelfth century.
