Russets, a relaxing rural retreat
Russets is a rural retreat situated in the High Weald village of High Hurstwood in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the edge of the Ashdown Forest. Russets is one of two adjoining cottages, set in the grounds of the owner's house and surrounded by 12 acres of gardens which are a haven for birds and wildlife. The cottage is equipped and furnished to a high standard for a relaxed holiday in which to truly unwind and get away from it all. Russets has been converted by a local builder who took great care to retain many original features in order to create a warm and welcoming cottage. THE KITCHEN As you come through the front door you enter a fully equipped kitchen with a dining area. There is plenty of china etc. and extra chairs are available if you wish to entertain a few friends or family. It has all that you need for a comfortable hassle-free stay including a full-sized electric oven, a microwave, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and automatic washer-dryer. SITTING ROOM From the kitchen you ascend the original steep narrow stairs up to a galleried sitting room and double bedroom both of which overlook woodland. The sitting room has comfortable seating, oak furniture and a Sony 28” LCD TV and DVD player. There is a supply of books to choose from, games to play and plenty of tourist information and maps to help you plan your stay*. We even supply you with binoculars and a bird book so that you can view the many visitors to our bird feeder which you can view directly from the window. * Please note that due to the current Covid restrictions the books, board games and leaflets are not available. THE BEDROOM AND EN-SUITE The bedroom is furnished with oak furniture and has a King sized (5ft) pocket sprung divan bed and a small remote-controlled TV. There is an en-suite bathroom with an over-bath shower and sloping ceiling. SITTING OUT AREA In front of the cottage is Russets own private sitting-out area surrounded by containers of plants with garden furniture, an umbrella and a Weber charcoal barbecue. Free parking is available on the premises. At the moment due to Covid restrictions, we are using a lockbox/key safe and you will find the pin number in the check-in instructions. However, I am available and here to help with anything that is needed should you so wish. If you want a rest from driving there is access onto a public footpath just outside the garden, and the Vanguard Way is only a 10 minute walk away. Several vineyards in the vicinity produce some rather good wines which can be sampled and bought. The Bluebell Steam Railway makes frequent journeys from Sheffield Park, with its period railway station and frequent special evening and weekend events for all ages. A great day out can also be enjoyed on the Ashdown Forest, the home of Winnie the Pooh, offering the perfect recipe for picnics, walking and riding. This is an area rich in historic houses and beautiful gardens. Glyndebourne Opera House is only a 30 minute drive. Why not have a day out, do some shopping and take in the Georgian Spa town of Royal Tunbridge Wells or visit the seaside towns of Brighton or Eastbourne. Battle Abbey and 1066 country are both within easy reach. Or how about hiring a bike and taking a ride on the Cuckoo Trail. The Hurstwood pub is just a 5 minute stroll away. The nearest railway station is only 6 minute's drive away with direct access to London in about 70 minutes. There is a village store a couple of miles up the road and the major supermarkets in Uckfield and Crowborough are all within a 15 minute drive. The ensuite has a sloping ceiling. We do not provide a carbon monoxide detector as we use oil, rather than gas.
