Recharge the batteries in the heart of the Suffolk countryside. Our all new Gypsy Carriage is situated at the heart of the tranquil Rum Bridge lake and glamping complex, just outside the historic market town of Clare. Located close to three intimate, reed fringed fishing ponds and the meandering River Stour, Gypsy Caravan “Rose” sleeps 2-3 plus up to two well-behaved dogs, with nearby bell tents and glamping pods accommodating larger family groups if required. Conveniently sited close to communal toilets, showers and a small ‘field kitchen’, the caravan benefits from outdoor seating and barbecue area, and is equipped with a metered electrical supply, panel heater and 3-pin/USB sockets, making it the right choice for anglers, birders, walkers… in fact, anyone seeking a reenergising short-break in splendid offgrid isolation. Guests have access to the nearby lakes, flush toilets, shower, and washing up area (with hot and cold water). The nearby Carol’s Kitchen (onsite food concession) offers hot and cold snacks and meals throughout the day. And a main meal delivery service is available in the evenings. The onsite shop and Carol's Kitchen are staffed from 8am till 6pm, 7 days a week. The hosts also live onsite and are available around the clock in case of emergency. Just a short hop from historic Bury St Edmunds and the university city of Cambridge, the picturesque medieval wool town of Clare boasts a rich and diverse history; and a host of attractions and distractions which belie its diminutive size - including a monthly artisan market, galleries, antique shops, a golf course, cafes, pubs and restaurants. At its heart: Clare Castle Country Park; home to the remains of a 13th Century stone castle keep set on a 70ft-high motte commanding panoramic views of the town. Circumscribed by the meandering, reed fringed River Stour, and providing a glorious setting for a picnic or a pre-prandial stroll, the park is the site of the original Clare Railway Station, in whose 1865 bookings hall you’ll find the unique Platform One cafe, which offers home cooked meals and snacks throughout the day. Of similar historic significance, the nearby Clare Priory dates back to 1248, making it one of the oldest religious houses in England; and the Ancient House Museum, just off the bustling market square, which offers fascinating insights into the 2,000-year history of Suffolk's smallest town. Foodies, too, will be spoilt for choice, thanks to a wealth of bistros, restaurants, takeaways, tea rooms, and traditional and gastro pubs. Walkers will delight in the area’s many circular walks and the town trail, which take in architecture from almost every period in history, and demonstrate why Clare was recently awarded ‘Walkers Are Welcome’ status. Though the ‘usual High Street suspects’ - Poundland, Costa, Subway and the like - are refreshingly conspicuous by their absence, Clare offers a panoply of independent shops including a butcher, hairdressers, beauty salon, antique shops, a Post Office and Co-Op. Nearby Haverhill has a Cineworld, a gym and choice of popular ‘chain’ restaurants and takeaways including KFC, Prezzo and Frankie & Benny’s. And Bury St. Edmunds and Cambridge - both around 30 minutes away by car - provide all the retail therapy you could possibly need (and then some). Clare is a Walkers are Welcome town, and boasts some fabulous walks just a short hop from the Rum Bridge Glamping site. There is also a limited local bus service. To make Rum Bridge as affordable as possible, we allow guests to book our accommodation only, and to supply their own bedding, towels, etc. We also offer an optional bedding package – including sheets, pillows, a duvet and cover – on request, at a cost of £6 / single, £12 / double for the duration of your stay.
