Cottage on the Nile in Jinja
A typical African style cottage with a large veranda, overlooking the River Nile. The garden has a wide variety of birds and monkeys. Cool off in the swimming pool or catch your own fish for lunch. 5km from Jinja, the adventure capital of E. Africa. This a thatched house with big verandah, sitting area, kitchen and bathroom with a shower, hand wash basin and toilet. There is one bedroom with a double bed and a mezzanine floor with two single beds. For a fifth person, there is a sofa bed in the sitting area but it is not very comfortable and only fit for young children. The cottage has a beautiful big garden sloping down to the river Nile and a 12 x 5 meter salt water swimming pool. There is solar power as a back up in case there is a power cut. Hot water is provided for through solar heating. Sometimes, in raining season, there may be a short supply of hot water. The cottage has a private parking space. You can choose to do self catering or you can order "the meal of the day" from the retreat centre connected to the garden. Bird safaris on the Nile and rafting can be arranged as well as horse back safaris. The river is great for fishing too. It's the perfect place for nature lovers, so bring your binoculars! The house is 5 km away from Jinja, the second biggest town in Uganda. It is easy to arrange public transport to take you to Jinja, where you will find restaurants, supermarkets and the famous "Source of the Nile." The cottage is an ideal place to go with friends or meet family far away from your home country. The cottage is comfortable but it is still located in Africa so there may be occasional power cuts or the water may be off for a few hours. We have put in solar back up and additional water tanks but it is possible that sometimes there may be no supply. Those situations are beyond our control. This year has been a season with many lake flies. Please keep your curtains closed and switch the outside light out., If you don’t expect a five star stay, the cottage will be an ideal place to rest, swim and enjoy nature. The guests have access to the 12x5 salt water swimming pool and to a beautiful laid out garden of the next door retreat centre. It is a shared swimming pool. The pool is also used for guests of the retreat centre. Monday evening from 5-7 the pool is open for the staff of the retreat centre and therefore it can be busy. There are swing beds in the garden for the person who wants to relax and see the river flow...... I am available for guests if there is need. However the practical things are taken care of by the staff of the retreat centre next door. The area is a quiet area without disco's and night life. It is near to a local village and the people in the neighborhood are very friendly and helpful. Sometimes there is some noise pollution from the hotel on the other side of the river, but we are constantly in contact with them about it. The nearest supermarket is 2 km away so its good to carry some food or snacks for the first days. There are boda boda's (motorcycle taxi's) available and the centre uses private hires to go into Jinja. The cost of a private hire is approx 6 euro's. There are a number of tourist attractions in Jinja, such as rafting, bungee jumping, kayaking and fishing. A local fisher boat can pick you up from the house to do a bird safari on the river Nile. A list with activities and phone numbers are in the house.
