The village of Grand in Roman times was called 'Andesina' and was a large sanctuary dedicated to the god 'Apollon Grannus'. Today it is an archeological site with the largest amphitheatre of ancient north-eastern Gaul and a magnificent Gallo-Roman mosaic still in situ. 20kms away in Domrémy-la-Pucelle is Joan of Arc's birthplace. From there you can visit the beautiful Meuse Valley and the town of Vaucouleurs where Joan of Arc left through the 'Porte de France' on her epic journeys. Then follow the small quiet lanes through the forests and plains as you wind your way back to Grand. There is a private parking area with a concrete path directly to the terrace of the gîte. The garden of the gîte is fenced with a gate. The owner declines all responsibility in the case of an accident occuring on her property outside the limit of the private parking area and the concrete path. Complete set of baby equipment (2 cots, 2 high chairs, baby bath, puschchair...). Free loan of bicycles (you will be asked to sign a liability waiver). Private enclosed garden and large south-facing terrace with garden furniture, barbecue and loungers. Large ping-pong table. Small table-football. Walking maps and small items can be loaned for hiking (rucksacks, compass, etc.). Books and indoor table games. There is a small herb garden next to the terrace and in the outer garden there are fruit bushes and fruit trees. The gîte is next to the home of the owner. I am always present when you arrive and leave the gîte. I live next-door but not facing the gîte or its private garden. If you need my help I am available, but I keep out of your way. Any special requests or needs will be taken into account. If the solution exists we will find it! The gîte is just a stone's throw from both the Gallo-Roman mosaic and the amphitheatre. The houses in the village of Grand are mainly old lorraine type houses, typical of this area in the south-west Lorraine region, built with the stones from the Gallo-Roman ramparts, the base of which you can see in the cellar of the gîte! The neigbouring villages border on the Haute-Marne which is more typical of the Champagne region, with its square buildings of whiter stone. The village of Grand is an ancient crossroads of Roman Routes. It sits on a plateau surrounded by large forests, and is accessible from the N4 (St. Dizier, Toul, Nancy), the N67 and A5 (St. Dizier, Chaumont, Langres), the D964 (Toul, Vaucouleurs, Neufchâteau), or the A31 (Toul, Châtenois, Langres). Hikers can be collected by car by arrangement with the gîte owner. There is a train station in Neufchâteau (20 kms). The owner declines all responsibility if the group comprises more persons than the official capacity of the gîte. Outside the private garden of the gîte, the owner declines all responsibility if there is an accident in the outer garden other than in the parking area or the access path.
