Islander's Retreat

A peaceful escape into the walls of an ancient stone house in which you can enjoy your own private space: 2 bedrooms, a bathroom, and 2 large terraces with views over olive trees, valleys and the sea. Ideal for a small group of up to 4 people in search of somewhere eco-friendly, not too close and yet not too far from the port village. Self catering. Ideal for Summer Holidays or just weekend's. Hikers, island-hoppers, families... Almost 300 years ago, our main house was built on the mountain face and used by local farmers. It withstood numerous landslides thanks to the fact that it was built into the rock. You will notice the remains of the old village only meters away from us. The people had to gradually evacuate the landslips that kept occurring back in the 1800's. Much later on, the space you can stay in (the next terrace down from the main house) was carved into what are now two lovely little bedrooms that share a private bathroom. The meter thick stone walls keep the place cool in Summer meaning we don't need to use aircon; however, we can give you a fan if you feel like it. Just outside the rooms is a terrace you can lounge on whilst contemplating the majestic valley views and the blue sea in the background. Olive trees, flowers, a fresh water spring only a stone's throw away, traditional architecture...A wonderful escape for those of you who enjoy a very natural set up ! On another terrace you have access to your own kitchenette with a dining table under a small shady pergola. You are more than welcome to help yourself to whatever seasonal fruits are growing at the time of your visit, we also have a kitchen garden with fresh vegetables some of the time. There is a lot of space outside: You have a lovely open terrace in front of your bedrooms with a stunning view over the hills, valley and sea. This terrace leads to some steps 20 meters away that take you to another (shady) terrace where your kitchenette is. There is a table and chairs under the palm leaf pergola that look out down the valley.. You are free to wander around the rather flowery and fruity garden, you will come across "The Chill Zone", a tempting and accessible hammock in the shade of two Olive trees overlooking Fellos valley. Dreamy!!! The rooms are small and cosy with very thick stone walls that keep it cool or warm depending on the season. All seating places are outdoor. I am available to give anyone advice and tips on where to go. We are very laid back and easy going, guests are welcome upstairs just like they can keep to themselves in their own quarters. I make the odd appearance to water the flowers or to go and check the water tank in the lemon garden. I am usually up for a hiking or snorkeling adventure with those who are keen. We have a bit of gear such as masks, snorkels, beach rackets...Just ask! Please note that booking alteration requests are not accepted. We live in a quiet, rural area with very few neighbours but only 7 minutes drive from the port. Andros is a big island so you will need to drive various distances to see different beaches. The drives are quite scenic and part of the fun: The best beaches are quite secluded and accessible via smooth dirt roads. Some attract a few people in Summer (those with beach bars) whilst others remain almost deserted! • Fellos beach : 7 minutes drive • Kourtali beach: 8 minutes drive • Aghios Petros (3 beach bars): 10 minutes • Golden Beach (beach bar, sheltered): 10 minutes Secluded beaches: • 4 beach bay cove (tiny, hidden away paradise spot) 15 minutes • Vlychada/Pyrgos: 25 minutes •Pissolimiona: 15 minutes • Zorgos beach (half the beach has sunbeds. Refreshments.Taverna.): 35 minutes. Stunning beach. • Vitali (taverna and beach bar): 35 minutes • Vori (shipwrecks): 1 hour • Ateni (beach bar): 1 hour • Achla (beach bar): 1h30 • Vlychada/Pyrgos: 25 minutes ...And many more! You need to rent a car, quad or scooter to get around Andros island. There are also buses from Gavrio to Batsi then on to Hora. You can catch a taxi too. Our lovely island is 40km long and 16km max wide. There are up to 40 different beaches to see all dotted around the coast with various types of road to access them. You don't need a 4by4. If you need a change from beaches there are lots of interesting panoramic drives to be taken inland, I can also give you a map indicating all the different hiking trails you can take yourself on. Needless to say, you can keep your days as busy or as lazy as you like! The island get's very dry in Summer. Please economize water. We use solar power so have quick showers to save hot water for the next in line! (If you are a large group, your host can flick the switch and heat it up for you within 15min.) Our tap water comes from the mountain and is perfectly fine to wash, rinse and shower in. However, we fill up our drinking water from the Spring which is 20meters from the house down a flight of steps. There are a lot of sneaky feral cats roaming around so you have to be careful with any food left out. Please be aware that if you decide to cancel any nights during your stay you will not be reimbursed. Double check ferry times before you make the booking with us and make sure you are properly organized! We have a very short season here on Andros and can't afford to loose days at the last moment because guests have realized there weren't any boats for them at desired times.
