Saffron Cottage, warm and cosy, in St Just
Saffron Cottage is a pair of ex miners cottages full of character and tastefully renovated into a 3 bedroom warm and comfortable holiday home. The space is ideally suited to those who want to explore this beautiful and magical corner of Cornwall. It is 2 minutes walk to the centre of St Just, and 15 minutes walk to Cape Cornwall and the South West coast path. The front door opens from the street into a hallway with stairs. On the rIght is a cosy sitting room containing a comfortable sofa bed and chairs around a fireplace with a multi-fuel burner. A sash window overlooks the back garden. There is an internet-enabled TV, books and games and WiFi is available throughout. Opposite the sitting room, a door opens from the hall into the fully equipped kitchen/diner with a flagstone floor. It contains everything you need, including a cooker, microwave, dishwasher and washing machine and a table which seats six people comfortably. From here is a door to the back porch and to the garden which is shared with neighbouring properties. This is quite common in St Just and works well, all the neighbours are friendly and everyone allows each other to enjoy it in their own way. A steep carpeted staircase leads to the first floor (mind your head half way up!) where the staircase splits with a further step either side off which are two comfortably furnished carpeted double bedrooms, and a smaller bedroom with bunk beds (adult sized single beds) and a family bathroom, W.C, shower over the bath, basin and heated towel rail. Good quality linen and towels are provided, please bring your own beach towels if required. On arrival, in the winter months, guests will be supplied with a small quantity of firelighters, kindling and coal, more can be easily purchased from the co-op or Clemo's in the centre of town. Parking is freely available on the road outside the cottage, you can usually park very close to the front door. Additional parking is available in the free car park in the centre of St Just, only 2 minutes walk away. For those without a car, there is a regular bus service from Penzance, through St Just to St Ives. All the space is available. We are based in a village on the Helford, but come westwards frequently to stay in our cottage. Our lovely housekeeper lives in Pendeen and is on hand to help. Please message me should you need anything and I will pass a message onto her. St Just, Penwith, is a UNESCO world heritage site due to its rich mining history. It is a friendly and eclectic small town which has a selection of shops, pubs and galleries with the larger centre of Penzance a 15 minute drive with an interesting selection of restaurants, galleries, shops, a mainline railway station and ferry services to the Isles of Scilly. There are many walks from St Just which are stunning. Cape Cornwall is a 10 mins walk from the cottage and has a golf course and rocky beach as well as the coast path running past it. The stunningly beautiful sandy beaches at Sennen Cove & Mounts Bay are within 20 minutes. The gardens at Trengwainton & Trewidden are 7.5 miles with St Michael's Mount and Marazion within 25 minutes. The coast road to St Ives takes less than 30 mins to drive, stop off at Botallack, Pendeen lighthouse, Geevor and Lelant mines, and walk around Gurnards Head to Zennor before enjoying the beautiful light at your destination, with so many shops and galleries, not forgetting the Tate St Ives. Well located for visiting Penzance, Lands End, Sennen Cove, quaint fishing harbours of Mousehole and Newlyn. Daily trips from Penzance to the beautiful Isles of Scilly by helicopter or passenger ferry or Sky Bus from Lands End airport. This is an excellent base for walking the Cornish Coastal Path which offers spectacular scenery and views in an area renowned for its birds and wildlife. The quiet cove of Porth Nanven is a short walk from the property. Large sandy surfing beaches of Sennen, Whitesand Bay and Gwynver are only a 5 mile drive. The Magical Minack Theatre is close by (open air theatre built in to the cliff face). If you turn right at Cape Cornwall along the South West Coast Path it takes you along the rugged paths of the Granite Coast past Kenidjack Castle, the Crown Mines to the remote, gleaming lighthouse at Pendeen Watch then onto Gurnards Head and Zennor to St Ives. Left from the Cape , where the Atlantic currents split, takes in part of Cornwall’s oldest mining district. The path is a mixture of easy open walking along the high cliff tops and short, rough ascents and descents, to the sweep of golden sand at Sennen Cove and then to Lands End. Buses regularly run through St Just from Penzance to St Ives. This is a great way to enjoy the rugged scenery of Cornwall’s spectacular Atlantic coast and the Land’s End peninsula. Take an open topped bus to discover panoramic views over land and out to sea that will take your breath away. Hop on and off where you like to discover pretty villages, craggy headlands and secret coves. There are bus stops along them, but buses will try to stop wherever it’s safe - just raise your arm in good time so the driver sees you. There are great walks to enjoy and by taking the bus you don’t have to retrace your steps - just hop on another bus further along. Routes A1, A2, A3 and A4 are run with open top buses and the A5 and A17 are run with closed top buses. This is an old cottage so the floors are a little uneven. There is a low beam that you will meet half way down the stairs so please duck or grouse! Please note the loo blocks up easily so stick to the 3Ps rule (pee poo and paper) many thanks! Sometimes we will accept one or two well behaved small dogs. If you would like to bring your pet please contact us before booking.
