Clay Well Cottage (ideal for a staycation)

A weaver’s cottage dating from the early 1800's with a wealth of original features such as mullion windows, beamed ceilings having views of the Colne Valley and beyond. This grade II listed cottage is perfect for a romantic getaway and/or for walking and cycling (as long as you like hills!). Golcar pronounced "Goker" ("L" is silent in local pronunciation) is a village located on a hillside crest above the Colne Valley in West Yorkshire. It is 3.3 miles away from the Huddersfield town centre. The Kitchen There is a fully fitted modern kitchen with fridge, washer/Dryer, Dishwasher and Freezer. There is plenty of cutlery, crockery, glassware, utensils etc. There is tea coffee condiments etc. We provide a welcome pack which usually consists of bread, butter, milk , eggs, and cereals. If you are vegan or would prefer something different let us know and we will try to accommodate your preferences. The Lounge There is a spacious lounge with beamed ceiling, stone mullion windows and door surround, pine dining table and chairs, antique ottoman, antique delph (plate) rack, pew in front of the window and corner cabinet. There is a sofa bed and a "smart" TV and speaker/docking station with blue tooth connectivity to stream music. Polished wooden floor, and central heating radiator. Electric stove and feature old brick fire place. The lounge overlooks the south facing paved terraced garden. The Bedroom The bedroom is spacious having a king size bed with quality mattress, pillows and bed linen so that a good nights sleep is assured. The ceiling is beamed and the room has stone mullion windows overlooking the garden There is a monks pew below the window, bed side cabinets and two antique chests of drawers, a corner wardrobe and an additional hanging rail. central heating radiator. The mullioned windows give plenty of light (This is where the weaving would have been done in days gone by) There are views over the garden and valley. The Landing With balustrade, this gives access to the bathroom, very spacious bedroom, and large walk-in storage cupboard which has a vacuum cleaner, iron, ironing board, cleaning materials, spare towels , loo rolls etc. It also provides additional clothes hanging space if required. The spacious bathroom with fully tiled floor and walls, having a large corner bath for a luxurious soak, separate shower, heated towel rail washbasin and WC . We provide loo rolls, towels, shampoo etc. Beamed ceiling. The garden This is a south facing sun trap with long distance views and giving a high degree of privacy. It is paved and on four separate levels. We keep it planted up with lots of containers.. There are two separate seating areas with tables and chairs and we have a large parasol for shade when needed. Chill out with a glass of wine. I've seen wild deer on the path that runs down the side of the house and garden. Parking There isn't off street parking but there is free but limited on street parking and sometimes it can be difficult to find a spot. There is additional parking on the road at the end- Carr Top Lane. There is a free car park in the village centre which is not far from the cottage but up a steep hill. Many of the roads in Golcar are quite narrow so it's best to fold in your wing mirrors. The owners of the large building to the right of the cottage - "Millbarn" have asked that we do not park on their side of the road right outside Millbarn as it can cause an obstruction. I've always tried to respect that so ask guests to as well although it should be OK for unloading/loading luggage. You will have exclusive access to all parts of the cottage and garden. We live nearby the cottage so are easily contactable but we don't intrude. The Colne Valley is a steep sided valley on the east flank of the Pennine Hills in the English county of West Yorkshire. It takes its name from the River Colne which rises above the town of Marsden and flows eastward along the floor of the valley. The name is generally used to describe that section of the valley of the River Colne that lies between its source and the town of Huddersfield, which lies at the point where the River Holme joins the River Colne. Less often, the name is used to describe the whole valley of the Colne, including the section through Huddersfield and on to the confluence of the Colne with the River Calder at Cooper Bridge. Using the more common definition, the Colne Valley includes the towns and villages of Marsden, Slaithwaite, Linthwaite, Milnsbridge and Golcar. Slaithwaite is a 2 mile walk or short drive along the valley where there are some interesting shops, bars and restaurants. The Colne Valley played a significant role in the development of the Industrial Revolution. Most of the population had been weavers for generations, so when water-powered textile mills were built on the many streams and small rivers in the area, the area was well set to become a major producer of textiles. The River Colne and the Huddersfield Narrow Canal provided early transport links which were soon added to by road and railway links to Huddersfield and Leeds to the east and Manchester and Liverpool to the west. By the end of the Second World War, the importance of the Colne Valley as a centre of textile production had begun to decrease. The area is now primarily residential and has excellent transport links. The Huddersfield Narrow Canal was reopened in 2001 and boat trips into Standedge Canal Tunnel are available; the National Trust advertises walks on Marsden Moor Estate; and television programmes such as Last of the Summer Wine and Where the Heart Is have been filmed there. There are regular buses from Golcar to Huddersfield Town center. There is a train station in Huddersfield with regular trans pennine trains to Leeds or Manchester including Manchester airport. Golcar is only ten minutes or less drive to the M62 motorway The cottage is very old, the short staircase is steep, the treads narrow and would be difficult for guests with infirmity or mobility issues. There are also a few steps down from the road to the door so care is needed. Elmo my black cat used to live with me in the cottage but refused to move with me when I moved a fairly short distance away. He now lives with my neighbour in the next door cottage. However he does tend to visit my guests and will come into the cottage if given half a chance! If he is a nuisance, you are allergic to or just don’t like cats feel free to clap your hands and shoo him away!
