Stylish & unique. Overlooking the beautiful Chater Valley in a tiny Conservation Village, this self-contained historic chapel conversion is surrounded by beautiful countryside and 5 mins drive from Rutland Water. Quiet and peaceful the grade ii property was converted in 2000, has a modern interior featured in 'Living Etc.' Magazine and won a local design award. Local helpful owners next door and an award winning Pub 2 mins walk. Completely OPEN PLAN INTERNAL WALLS ONLY AROUND BATHROOM LOCATION A perfect romantic getaway, a highly unusual property in a fantastic location with a charming historic grade ii Listed exterior and, by contrast, a tranquil airy minimalist interior, with double height ceiling and huge windows, filled with light, and yet warm and cosy. The best of both worlds. Soak up the peace and tranquility inside whilst enjoying warm modern comfort indoors, in the midst of beautiful rural scenery, at the very edge of one of the smallest quietest villages in Rutland. Stay somewhere different. We believe that there is nothing else like this in Rutland. The award winning King's Arms Pub/Restaurant and Smokehouse in Wing is a 2 minute walk. The field views in the photos above are what you will experience right outside the Chapel, a few steps from the door will take you to a stile entrance to the closest field. You will feel immersed in nature as soon as you arrive at the Chapel, surrounded as it is by some of the best Rutland scenery, lots of fresh air, birdsong and wildlife. You can see plenty of birdlife from the Chapel itself, and the area around abounds with squirrels, rabbits, muntjac deer, foxes, pheasants and badgers. Lyndon Nature Reserve is a 5 minute drive away. A unique chapel conversion due to it's Modernist interior which won a local design award (George Phillips Award) and was on the cover of, and featured in "Living Etc." the home and interiors Magazine upon it's conversion to a house at the turn of the Millennium. The cleverly designed interior is so calm and relaxing you'll feel on holiday the moment you arrive. Almost 200 years old, the Chapel is located on the edge of Wing (population 300), a tiny, historic Conservation village in Southern Rutland. There are some glorious walks to be had from right outside across farmland with public access, with beautiful scenery of open fields, hedgerows and streams. This property is very rural, quiet and peaceful, with easy access to walks across open countryside and perfect for those seeking a relaxing break to recharge their batteries. Everything that Rutland has to offer along with historic Stamford, and Rockingham Castle is only a short drive away. Uppingham, the closest market town is under a 10 minute drive, Oakham is 10 minutes and Stamford 20 minutes. Burghley House is 30 minutes, and Rutland Water is 5 - 20 minutes depending which shore you visit, or slightly longer to the tip of the Hambleton Peninsula. The closest point on Rutland Water is the Lyndon Nature Reserve, about 5 minutes drive, or you can walk there directly from the Chapel across public footpaths, and it takes about an hour. GENERAL INFORMATION The Chapel is strictly. "NO SMOKING" and NO PETS. Sorry. Due to the absence of an enclosed garden we don't feel this property is suitable for pets. CHILDREN are welcome subject to age ( for safety reasons, due to the Mezzanine), see CHILDREN below. Check-in and check out any day of the week. Check in after 15.00 and out by 10.00. Early check and late check out upon request (subject to availability). We take care of many of the HOUSEHOLD BASICS so even though this is self catering, you only really need to think about your meals. Bathroom and kitchen essentials are provided. Even though the Chapel is PROFESSIONALLY CLEANED and SANITISED and most things you'll use are either rotated or fresh for you, we provide many cleaning materials too, for your peace of mind. This property is almost COMPLETELY OPEN PLAN in design – the only internal walls being around the Bathroom! PARKING is on unrestricted very quiet Village Road immediately outside. If you were to have any difficulties parking you can use the Owners driveway, although in six years as a holiday cottage this has never been necessary as the road is quiet. You are almost as likely to see horses outside as cars, Red Kites fly over the Chapel every day, and sheep and cattle are often only a few metres away in the nearby fields. Built for Methodist villagers in 1841, it was a Chapel for over 150 years. It was converted to become a home at the turn of the Millennium and It has been available to rent as a holiday home since late 2015. There are NO HIDDEN CHARGES if you rent this property. There is a small surcharge for extra guests (payable if occupancy is above 2) just to cover extra laundry and cleaning, and a charge for additional logs for the Wood Burner. Everything else is included in the price stated. INTERIOR The modern conversion retains the original features such as the double height ceiling and four huge arched windows which run from chest height to almost the full height of the building. The interior is completely white. This creates the perfect holiday atmosphere as the space is very light and airy, perfect for a relaxing break, and cleverly makes the most of the space providing 2 bedrooms, bathroom, living area, kitchen and dining area. The Chapel has a lovely relaxing feel to it. Guests often remark on how warm, relaxing and inviting it feels. This property is highly practical for guests having already been a private residence for several years and is warm and cosy enough to stay in all year round. At Ground Floor are the Living / Kitchen / Dining Areas ENTRANCE You enter through the original Chapel front door with it's large iron hinges, (under the original Victorian Porch with corrugated roof), a beautiful large wide wooden door, still more or less as it was in 1841. Arriving after dark will trigger a sensor linked to the light inside the outside porch so you will be able to see clearly. As you cross the solid stone stepped threshold, It takes you inside the ground floor level, either into the Living area to the right or up two steps past a storage area with shoe rack and shelves containing a stereo unit and plants, towards the staircase. To the right of the staircase behind the Living area lies the kitchen and beyond that the dining area. LIVING AREA A large ‘L’ shaped sofa, which seats up to six people provides ample space for you to relax during your stay. There is a rug immediately alongside the sofa and a glass topped coffee table. There is also a built-in table at one end with shelving below. The area also includes ( with freeview) Samsung Smart TV & Samsung blu-ray player to keep you entertained and the TV screen is fitted into the outside of the door of the TV unit, enabling you to swing it out to obtain the best viewing angle. There is a large wood burning stove to add to the heat and the ambience of your stay. The Wood Burner is laid ready for your visit so that all you need to do when you arrive is to light it with a match. Logs, kindling, paper, matches and eco friendly firelighters are provided in the log basket, and if you run out further logs are delivered to your door upon request. Fireside tools are also provided. There is a "hall" table alongside the door. The ceiling fan, to help keep you cool during the summer months is also above this area. KITCHEN and DINING The Kitchen area is well equipped with everything you need to self cater; the Chapel was previously a private home so has good kitchen and bathroom facilities. The kitchen has a 4 plate electric hob together with both fan and conventional ovens/grill, a large fridge/freezer, numerous utensils, cutlery, saucepans, frying pan, and oven and serving dishes. Not to mention the kettle, toaster, microwave oven, cafetiere and wine rack. Dining ware, glassware, cutlery and mugs etc. are all 8 pieces of each so that you will not be continually washing up. There is a dishwasher below the sink together with a cupboard containing a recyclables bin, compostables bin and a place for the coffee sachets we provide once used. We are keen to impact the environment as little as possible and take part in the Terracycle scheme for Taylor's of Harrogate (the coffee provided to guests). Hidden away under the stairs is a washing machine and fold out clothes airer/dryer. Inside the broom cupboard is a vacuum, brushes, travel iron and Ironing board. The Dining Area has a table and chairs to seat four very comfortably. The table is round with a heavy glass top and the four chairs have chrome frames and leather seats and backs. Table mats and coasters are provided. The dining area cupboard houses an extension lead, rucksack, small picnic set and rug, shopping bags etc for your use. A full inventory which lists the kitchen's contents is emailed prior to your arrival so you are aware of what to expect. This is only to ensure that you do not duplicate any items by bringing them from home unnecessarily to hopefully help to reduce your luggage. .We keep the kitchen stocked with some basic essentials such as dishwasher tabs, soap, washing up liquid, salt, pepper, laundry detergent, cleaning products, cling film, foil, cooking oil, a first aid kit, bin bags, and plenty of tea and hand towels and dish cloths. To welcome you upon arrival the kitchen is stocked with a generous supply of good quality tea bags and coffee with white sugar sachets and a small box of local hand made fudge. A pint of fresh semi skimmed cow's milk will be available in the fridge (other milks are available and we always ask about allergies prior to your arrival). All of these complimentary items are provided as standard at no extra charge along with a basket of logs, firelighters and kindling for the Wood Burner. There is a plug in sensor light in the kitchen for night time visits to the fridge :-) BEDROOMS and BATHROOM At the Mezzanine level on the first floor there are two Bedroom areas and a Bathroom. This area is open plan although the Bathroom has solid walls and is obviously completely private. It acts as a divider between the bedrooms which are not visible from each other unless you are out of bed and standing at the balustrades. please take a look at the photos to see the layout. The two Bed areas have glass balustrade viewing to the Living Area below. They are open plan making the most of the light airy feel inside the Chapel (please see photos). The MASTER BEDROOM area has a king size bed and side boards with shelving below and reading lamps above. The mattress is the award winning"EMMA" mattress, which, according to the manufacturers i (Website hidden by Airbnb) the U.K.'s most award winning best selling mattress." It's designed to be extremely comfortable and supportive, breathable and to suit most people. Trustpilot give it an "Excellent" 4.4/5. It was purchased in 2022. This area is provided with a PURE DAB radio alarm clock, bin, coasters and a few ornaments etc. It is entered from the landing/storage area, and is behind the bathroom. It is above the dining area below. It is well lit by the four large original windows, but there are no privacy issues in relation to outside. The external walls of the bathroom act as a privacy screen between the two bedrooms. The SECOND BEDROOM area has a small (4ft wide) double bed with bed side table, shelf and touch sensitive bed side lamps. It also has a bin with recycling divider, and a mobile phone charger on the lamp cable (not necessarily suitable for all makes of phone). The bed is narrower than a standard double bed. The room"floats" above part of the living area below. The bedroom is visible when visiting the bathroom. The occupants are not visible to outside but there is a pretty view from the room to the outside area to the front of the chapel. The Bathroom appears modest from the outside, but is comfortably equipped with an electric chrome towel rail, extractor fan, round washbasin, WC and bath with shower facilities over. The bath is full size. The shower has a moveable glass screen with curved top. It is hinged at one side and easily swung for for your convenience. The temperature on the towel rail is adjustable with 5 different settings including 'Eco' to provide heat for the bathroom in addition to the towels. The bathroom is mostly tiled and there are areas with shelving for your belongings. Lighting is adjustable with two separately controlled lights, one of which is bright and makes for a well lit interior and the other of which gives a soft relaxing glow should you wish to take a long bath. Hand soap and hand lotion are provided along with cloths, air freshener and cleaning materials (all rotated between guests). TOWELS Hand and bath sheet size towels, face cloths and bath mats are provided free of charge, and as an individually made up sealed bag for each guest. Towels are all from "OUT OF EDEN" and are either their "Ultimate" 500g 100% cotton towels or their "Luxury" 600g 100% cotton Eco towels. Spare towels, facecloths and mats are also always available inside the Airing cupboard along with guest bathrobes and slippers. The Bathrobes and slippers are complimentary to use but are laundered between guests and reused. A waste bin and toilet brush are provided. Linking these three areas is a landing with a substantial amount of wardrobe and storage space including two double wardrobes with hangers, an airing cupboard with it's own hanging rail, a large floor to ceiling shelving unit and a shoe tray. The airing cupboard houses the bathrobes, slippers, spare pillows, spare towels and bedlinen, extra toilet rolls and fleece blanket. There is a hair dryer, make-up mirror, luggage scale and sewing kit in the storage unit. There is a smoke detector on the landing which is tested weekly by the owners themselves. Both bedrooms have a plug in sensor light for nighttime which can be switched off if you prefer. The smaller bedroom has a wall light in addition to the bedside lights. BEDDING: None of our bedding contains feathers or down. We strive to provide as comfortable a nights sleep as possible and hygiene is key. The King Size bed mattress is an EMMA memory foam mattress, purchased in 2022. It has been a Which best buy for several years, and is a medium/firm mattress. It is however very supportive and most people find it very comfortable and conducive of a good night's sleep. The double bed, which is used far less frequently, has a memory foam mattress purchased in 2016. Both bed bases are solid wood. All of our linen is from either "THE WHITE COMPANY" or "OUT OF EDEN". The White Company linen is all 100% COTTON . The Out of Eden linen is either CERTIFIED EGYPTIAN COTTON (all sheets and the top pillow cases), 100% cotton percale (the duvet covers and some matching pillow cases) or, in the case of more recent purchases, "Woodsilk " which is luxury high thread count cotton which is environmentally more sustainable to produce. Each bed is provided with 4 good quality pillows and duvet. All duvets are King size. Bedding (2 x mattress protectors per bed, 2 x pillow protectors per pillow and 1 x duvet protector per duvet, 1 x pillow case per pillow, 1 x fitted sheet per bed and 1 x duvet cover ) ALL freshly laundered and changed immediately before each stay with spare linen provided in the airing cupboard and any extra to that upon request. There is no charge for extra linen. TOWELS (also all from Out of Eden) are provided freshly laundered (a minimum of a bath sheet, hand towel, face cloth and bath mat per individual guest) ALL changed immediately before each stay . See BATHROOM for more details. Further spare towels always available in the bathroom and upon request at no charge. If your stay lasts over a week a change of bedding is provided free of charge. OUTSIDE AREA The Chapel has a gravelled area along the front and down one side just wide enough for chairs and a bistro table which it would be misleading to call a garden as such. But, the owners have made every effort to make the most of the limited space, with many plants in pots, fresh herbs for your cooking in traditional manger baskets, outdoor cushions and a vintage feel in keeping with the exterior, being provided by a quirky range of items to add to the character. The strip at the front runs the width of the Chapel, faces south west, can get very hot in summer ( a small umbrella is provided). You can see the sunset over the surrounding fields from here. An eclectic mix of potted plants covers the boundary wall increasing the sense of privacy, and pots are scattered down into the nooks and crannies. It's perfectly possible to be hidden from passers by when seated, but the locals are friendly and you'll probably only see a few dog walkers anyway. Many guests use the space. The strip down the side of the Chapel provides access to the Cycle Store and includes a clothes line. !!CHILDREN!! : Due to the nature of the property, especially at the Mezzanine level, while we encourage "Babes~in~arms", but we do not feel it suitable for "mobile" children between 9 months and 7 years old. Sorry. Young babies and children aged 8 and over are welcome. For reasons of safety due to the fact that there is a Mezzanine floor above ground level separated only by a handrail and glass panel to (adult) waist height young children may be at risk of falling if they climb onto the rail. These stipulations are for general guidance only. Obviously it is your responsibility to ensure your children's safety. PLEASE ASK if you have any questions about this aspect. We are always happy to help with advice/further photos etc. Please also see the full range of photos in the listing. Because we have highlighted the potential dangers we accept no responsibility for injury or other consequence of a fall accidental or otherwise. Clearly the property is unsuitable for those of any age who sleepwalk. Although it is open plan it is not possible to see the bed in the other room when you are in bed yourself nor is it possible to see the beds properly from downstairs. Your child's safety is your own responsibility at all times. BABES~IN~ARMS: We have a good range of equipment for babies staying at The Chapel including a travel cot / play pen with bedding, a secure high chair, age appropriate cutlery and crockery, play mat, change mat with replacement washable covers and a baby bath with bath toys. Hopefully this will help reduce the space taken up in your car for the journey here! We have some suitable cot linen, blankets, a sleep bag and towels, but you'll probably want to bring your own in addition. All of the baby equipment is of a good quality and is checked and steam cleaned before and after each use. Please let us know when you book if you would like to use these facilities so that we may prepare them ahead of your arrival. CYCLE STORE: Down the side of the building there is a store which you are welcome to use. It is large enough to comfortably stow away a few bicycles and has a bolted door which can be padlocked to provide security. A padlock is provided and there is also a security light. WASHING LINE: Down this side of The Chapel there is also a retractable washing line. CLEANING The Chapel is immaculately presented and professionally cleaned and then checked personally by the owners before each guest stay. WI-FI / INTERNET ACCESS: Wi-fi / Internet access is available. Details for connection are found in the information welcome pack. This also means you can use the smart tv to access catch up tv using BBC iplayer, itv player, All4 etc. HEATING: Each of the main areas of The Chapel including the bedrooms has its own individually controllable energy efficient electric heater which is pre-programmed, but allows you to easily override the settings should you need to. You can easily adjust the temperature of each eco-radiator. Basic instructions are on each radiator and full instructions in the information folders. The Bathroom is heated by the towel rail/heater which you can switch on or off as you please and also adjust the temperature. For those of you who wish to, the wood burning stove is available for use and laid ready for you to just light it. We ask that you only use the complimentary well seasoned wood and kindling provided. Additional wood, kindling and firelighters can be purchased for a (small economical) fee during your stay and will be delivered to you as soon as possible. FLOWERS: The Chapel is often decorated with fresh flowers, grown by Samantha in her and Colin's garden. If you have any allergies to pollen etc. please let us know prior to your visit. CHRISTMAS: The Chapel is fully and lovingly decorated at Christmas, usually with a different decoration style each year. The Christmas guests in 2021 said in their 5* review that "the Chapel is absolutely magical" and that their stay was like "living in a Christmas movie". It's obviously a subjective view, but the Chapel does especially suit being bedecked with fairy lights outside, and the inside lends itself very well to a variety of styles of decorations. For example, in 2019 the look was natural and outdoorsy, and in 2021 it was mid century style/1950's. Please see the photos in the listing. For 2022 it is likely to be something different again. We try our utmost to provide a homely, welcoming, but also fun environment in which to spend Christmas. Most of the decorations are hand made by Samantha, using sustainable and/or recyclable materials and natural resources from her and Colin's garden. Please see the photos above which show the decorations in previous years. Our most recent Christmas review was by Lee, for Christmas 2021 and should be available if you scroll down the reviews. During December there will be some elements of Christmas decorations (usually a tree with fairy lights and fairy lights outside) but the bulk of the Christmas decorations are only installed for the Christmas and New Year guests. The decorations are left in place for the Christmas stay and taken down AFTER the New Year guests have left. OWNERS The Chapel is owned and run solely by Colin and Samantha, who live next door in a completely separate property, and are usually available at all times to help in any way they can. Samantha is around most of the time should you need help. It is a small independent family run holiday let, and is the only property in their business. Both Professional people, (Samantha is a Solicitor (non practising) who is now a stay at home Mum) , Colin and Samantha bought the Chapel because they love it, and thought it would be perfect as a holiday home. Besides being unique, and cleverly designed, the Chapel has a lovely feel to it, often remarked upon by guests. It's impossible to capture in a photo; Samantha describes it as feeling as though the building is giving you a hug. Colin and Samantha have had Airbnb Superhost status ever since joining Airbnb (after completing the first year) and are now experienced hosts They both grew up in Rutland and know the area extremely well. They love sharing the Chapel with guests and making sure that anyone who stays has the best experience possible. Besides now owning the Chapel the couple have a long history with it. They met when Colin moved in after architect David who converted it to a home moved abroad. David and Colin were colleagues and Colin helped David with some of the original work. Colin has carried out further renovations since he and Samantha bought the property in 2015. Samantha has lived next door to the Chapel since moving to Wing and witnessed it's conversion to a home first hand. Colin and Samantha have a young daughter and also other extended family in the area. Colin is kept busy with work but is based locally and always has time for guests. He also tries to find time for his kitebuggying hobby when possible. Samantha oversees the housekeeping side of things for the Chapel, and when she's not doing that loves gardening, craft and anything creative. She is usually around if you need any help at all. She always makes a point of just popping round after guests arrive to welcome them and make sure everything is ok for them. Parking immediately outside on the Road is unrestricted. The village is tiny and really quiet so there's rarely a problem with parking. There is no charge for parking. Your car will probably be about 3 or 4 paces away from the front door. In the extremely unlikely event of you not finding a space Samantha and Colin's driveway next to the Chapel may be used . Outside, to the front of The Chapel there is a small graveled area which is just big enough for a few chairs and a bistro table (provided). Perfect for sitting out under the stars and having a bite to eat and drink. The Chapel is strictly no smoking, including the outside area. CYCLE STORE: Down the side of the building there is a store which you are welcome to use. It is large enough to comfortably stow away a few bicycles and has a bolted door which can be padlocked to provide security. A padlock is provided and there is also a security light. We put a lot of love into the Chapel and we think that is reflected in our reviews. We love meeting our guests but equally will respect your privacy. Although we live next door you will not be aware of us as our house is set back from the Chapel. We are around much of the time should you need help. Samantha is usually at home all day. On your arrival there will be an information welcome pack, containing all you need to know about The Chapel and its facilities as well as local amenities, attractions and other such tourist information. The local information provided is very detailed and should enable you to familiarise yourself with the area in no time. However, should you require any information before you get here please do not hesitate to contact us by email, text or phone. We are very responsive. You don't need to meet us if you'd rather enjoy your own seclusion. The Chapel is in Wing, a very small (population 300), quiet, traditional Conservation village within the glorious Rutland countryside. The Chapel is virtually at the edge of the Village close to open farmland (see photos) accessible on foot. Rutland Water is just over the horizon and not quite visible but the view is stunning nonetheless. Wing is a beautiful village, well worth a stroll around to admire the historic buildings including the Village Church, thatched cottages and ancient Labyrinth or Turf Maze. The local pub - The King's Arms - is just a few minutes walk and excellent for food and drink. Wing is situated between the county town of Oakham and the nearby town of Uppingham, both being historic market towns. Each town and the villages which surround them are of much interest from an historical and architectural point of view as well as the many independent specialist shops, museums, art galleries, hostelries, garden nurseries, restaurants, cafes and tea rooms. The Kings Arms, less than a 3 minute walk from the door, provides locally sourced food and ale alongside roaring open fires and a short walk to the edge of the village you’ll find yourself at Wing Hall where you can sample the delights of the Farm and Village Shop and the beautifully located Buttonhole Cafe. On Sundays you can enjoy afternoon tea at the village hall and various attractions throughout the year. The South Shore of Rutland Water is well within a 5 minute car journey or approx 1 hour walk (as is Lyndon Nature Reserve on it's Shore) with easy access to its various attractions such as sailing and water sports facilities, cycle tracks, bird-watching, fishing lodge, walking, climbing wall, reptile and bug zoo, crazy golf etc, etc. The Rutland countryside’s highways and byways are ideal for cycling and walking alike and there is a multitude of footpaths and bridleways which crisscross the agricultural land between the towns, villages and hamlets. For fishing, walking and cycling, the Eye Brook reservoir is a 13 minute drive and Wakerley Woods is 15 minutes away. A 20 minute drive hop across the border into Lincolnshire will see you in Stamford with its nearby Burghley House famed for the Burghley Horse Trials, being the back drop to many period dramas, its gardens and its historical architectural interest. Northamptonshire with it's stately homes and gardens including Rockingham Castle only 20 mins away is also easily accessible from The Chapel. There are various golf courses throughout the county from the historic Luffenham Heath Golf Club (15 mins away) to the newer Rutland Water (10 mins away) and Greetham Valley Golf Courses (25-30 mins). The main transportation from Wing is either by car, cycle or foot. There is an occasional bus service. The nearest train stations are in Oakham or Stamford. There are many taxi companies in the area. A car is recommended due to the rural nature of this location. Wing is lovely but is a very small village and assuming you will wish to visit other places too you will need a car. It is possible to walk to Rutland Water from The Chapel, and almost completely without crossing a road, but you need to be reasonably fit for the return upward climb. Cycling is a given, bearing in mind that this is Rutland (cycles can be hired at Rutland Water or from Wing Hall in Wing) but as before bear in mind that Wing is situated on top of a hill (hence the great views!) COVID-19 HEALTH AND SAFETY MEASURES: 1. 1 day/1 night Buffer between guests to eliminate same day changeovers and ensure a lengthy period between individual guests. Some people might prefer more privacy from their accomodation, for example if two couples are holidaying together. However we have had many guests using both bedrooms happily. The beds are not visible to or from each other when you are in them. The bathroom acts as a room divide between the bedrooms. We should point out however that the second bedroom is fully visible when entering the bathroom as it is close to the bathroom door. There is complete privacy inside the bathroom.
