Gainsborough is a small market town in north-west Lincolnshire, 18 miles from Lincoln. The town is on the River Trent and dates back to medieval times, appearing in the Domesday Book as 'Gainesburg' and one of the capital cities of Mercia during the Anglo-Saxon period. It was also once the most inland port in England, being 55 miles from the North Sea.
