Bergen Dam cottage
Bergen Dam is a renovated worker's cottage sitting stoksiel alone on the foothills of the Soetmuisberg mountains. The views from all sides of the cottage include undulating veld, mountains clad in fynbos and the farm's irrigation dam-hence Bergen Dam. Complementing the away from it all atmosphere is the absence of electricity! Instead, there's a gas fridge, a gas stove/oven and a wood-burning donkey for hot water. A well rounded weekend package for a family or small group of friends. The general style and decor is rustic-luxury, homely and comfortable: spaansriet ceilings, cement floors, rough walls, old country furniture, good mattresses and linen, and nice personal touches scattered here and there. The living area is open-plan and features a well-equipped kitchen, a fireplace and convivial dining table. Double glass doors lead from the living area to a lazy deck equipped with umbrella and table - a nice spot to enjoy that freebie bottle of wine - while to the other side there's a sheltered lapa with braai area. A further stone's throw leads to an old cement farm dam - a good place to soak in those late afternoon Overberg views. Between braaing, enjoying the vroetel pool, and general kicking back on the deck, the farm has loads of scope for walking, canoeing on the dam, bird-watching, and visiting the dairy to collect your fresh milk. If you're up for some horse riding Minke du Toit has great adventures on offer. In other words, a very well rounded weekend package for a family or small group of friends. P.S. Check out Bergen Dam's latest sibbling addition, De Melkportaal Cottage sitauted 2km away on the same farm. We stay on the farm and we are available if need be. We tend to give guests their privacy and space but we are definitely available at all times to assist guests during this great getaway. Bergen Dam is also a fairly short hop from Arniston, Struisbaai, De Hoop and De Mond nature reservesi, Elim, Bredasdorp and Baardskeerdersbos. We are situated close to our local wine route that boast stunning restaurants and tasting rooms. Visit the southern most tip of Africa in Agulhas. Go shark cage diving in Gansbaai. Visit the Shipwreck museum in Bredasdorp - amazing tales about the treacherous coastline. Gravel roads leading to farm are in good condition. The Soetmuisberg has lovely hiking and MTB routes under development (Website hidden by Airbnb) route is also available to guests on our neighboring farm
