Vravrona was dedicated to Artemis, the goddess protecting hunters, animals, and the safe birth of people. Having been angry at the killing of two small female bears, she caused an epidemic in Athens. She then asked an oracle to tell the Athenians that all girls aged 5 to 10 who lived in Attica should be devoted to it. The Athenians obeyed the goddess's request and brought their girls to her temple, where they spent their long childhood serving and participating in the celebrations that were held there. The girls, who went to the temple, were called bears (bears). The celebrations in honor of the goddess were called Vravronia and included musical events, sports competitions and poetry recitation.
