The whole village is great for relaxing and swimming, and there are many other options such as walking along the paths, hiking, horse riding and mountain biking. Kalamaki is located in south Pelion. It has a traditional character, as all the houses have roofs made from locally quarried stone slabs (the famous Pelion slabs), and the paths are also paved with these slabs. Those slabs also roof all the monasteries in the Holy Mount Athos. On the beach of the village, called Kalamaki, there is a spring of high quality, fresh water. In the past, passers-by used a straw to drink this water. That's why the beach was named Kalamaki (the greek word for straw is "kalamaki"), and later the whole village took the same name. The first name of the village was Propan, a name given to it because of the location of the village, as it is the first village of Pelion which can see the sun rise early in the morning (Pro = before and pan = everybody else).
