Shepherd's Barn- The Quadrangle
Shepherds Barn at The Quadrangle is a beautifully converted Victorian farmstead able to accommodate family or bubbles for holidays, just 40 minutes from London. It features beautiful gardens and a woodland orchard, a grand barn and open-plan living space and kitchen, a dormitory, a double bedroom and river for wild swimming. Please note we have close neighbours so sadly can't host parties or weddings. Our family has looked after the Quadrangle for over four decades, and in 2007 it was established as a trust to protect its unique architecture and wildlife and to be home to an arts and ecology organisation. The Big Barn is the centrepiece of the Quadrangle. Unconverted but with a timber floor and high ceilings this is a great space for games, performances, roller skating, workshops, yoga, filming and photography and exhibitions. It’s not heated or insulated so you need to be pretty active in the winter to keep warm! In the summer the Big Barn can be used as a giant dining room or extra living space. There's a table tennis table, skateboards, pogo stick, unicycle and other stuff for kids. There are extra tables and seating available for events. On the ground floor of Shepherds Barn there’s an open plan living room and kitchen, one double bedroom and toilet/shower room, and upstairs is the dormitory. The pasture field is now home to a permaculture forest garden, with fruit trees, a pond, camping areas and compost toilets. There are converted stables that open onto a shared courtyard (we only own half). These are used by local crafts people and as a general space for mending things. There's a vintage tractor, which seems to always need fixing and even an Airstream caravan, which we have been renovating for quite a while! The Quadrangle is large and spacious and there is plenty of outside space. One half of the buildings, and some of the fields, are owned by lovely neighbours so it is crucial that large groups respect their privacy and peace. Very sorry but that does mean no parties or weddings. Yard Facilities - two toilets and one shower are located in the yard and are available for use on a non-exclusive basis (Website hidden by Airbnb) The Cart Shed - space to be used as an open-air café, bar or food preparation area (Website hidden by Airbnb) Grounds - Lawn and forest garden field of 2.5 acres with access to the river for swimming Our extended family stay in the Granary from time to time and you might bump into workshop tenants and our neighbours in the courtyard. There are lots of courses, workshops and events throughout the summer. You can find more info on what's happening on The Quadrangle's website. The Quadrangle sits in the Darent Valley, between the villages of Shoreham and Otford. There are great walks along the famous Darent Valley Path and we can give you maps and directions. It's also worth checking out Lullingstone Roman Villa, Lullingstone Castle and the Hop Shop at Castle Farm, which are all close by. The Quadrangle is walking distance from both Shoreham and Otford Station and a short taxi ride from Sevenoaks. We can provide you with walking maps and directions from the stations if needed. We are 40 minutes from Gatwick Airport For Shepherd's barn/Big Barn and the forest garden over summer 2020 it is £250 a night during the week and £300 over weekends for up to 7 people and £32 a head a night for extra people.
