Artists' Bush and Ocean Homestay
Martin and Britta welcome you to a very special artists' retreat. We live on the edge of the Waitakere National Park in West Auckland, three minutes walk from a quiet beach. We are surrounded by stunning native bush and have a large mature garden. Our house is filled with beautiful furnishings from far flung corners of the globe. The garden is a haven of botanical delights, set amongst panoramic bush views, close to the ocean. Guests can access the sitting room, sun room, artists' studio and kitchen. We will be available to offer ideas for day trips. We are very happy to take visitors on guided tours of some of the most breathtaking landscapes of the wild West Coast for a small additional charge. We have an excellent back catalogue of movies which we regularly update. Guests are welcome to watch a film with us in the evening, whilst being toasted beside our cozy wood burner (during the cool months). Titirangi is very much a cultural centre for West Auckland. It hosts the world class Te Uru Contemporary Art Gallery, the Upstairs Community Art Gallery and the McCahon House Museum, dedicated to the life work of the renowned local artist Colin McCahon. The roof of Lopdell House offers excellent views of the surrounding bays and bush clad hills. Titirangi has a number of excellent restaurants, a petrol station and all the usual village amenities. It makes an excellent base for exploring the national park, with many quiet local beaches. Visit the Arataki Visitors Centre (4 km up Scenic Drive) to learn more about the region and get information on local bush walks and the world famous Hillary Trail. There is a bus service just outside our home which takes you to the New Lynn transport hub. From there you can take a bus or train to central Auckland and its main attractions. A one way trip to central Auckland takes around 50 mins by public transport or 30 mins by car. You can pick up a hire car from Auckland airport. Prices start at $19 per day. Please note that the sofa bed has a lightweight mattress. Several walks begin at our doorstep, taking you through unspoilt bush to hidden bays, mangrove inlets and ever changing views of Manukau Harbour. Britta and I are both artists and keen photographers, with a special interest in the magnificent natural beauty of the Waitakere National Park. We have one double bedroom for guests, and one shared bathroom. We have two bicycles available and a bus stop close by. We can offer a single bedroom for travellers with one child at no extra cost. The house is a 40 minute taxi ride from Auckland International Airport or the city centre.
