Casa da Cerro da Correia (register 36934 / AL) is located 3 kms from the village of Manteigas, in the Serra da Estrela Natural Park and has a unique view over the Zêzere Glacier Valley. Surrounded by a forest of chestnut trees, oaks and holm-oaks, Casa Cerro da Correia is a quiet accommodation. Throughout the day you can hear the singing of different types of native birds of the Natural Park of Serra da Estrela: hoops, crows, owls ... The garden has native species. The goal is to create a balanced ecosystem, to refuse the use of invasive species, to reduce water consumption and to enhance food for insects and birds in the region. To do this, when we started designing the garden, we kept the plants that were already there like carqueja, rosmaninho, yellow gesta, and several wild species. All the plants or trees that have been put there are species that exist in the Natural Park: rosemary, juniper, holly, lavender, rosemary and milk thistle. In the pine forest we started the slow process (progressing to the rhythm of the trees, not the man) replacing the resinous trees, which have a higher risk of fire, by the hardwoods, with lower fuel risk. We planted black oak, holm oaks and arbutus trees, and at the same time protected the shoots of these species that are born spontaneously under the pines. When these leafy trees are larger we can progressively reduce the number of pine trees. Our guests have access to the garden, forest and the young orchard. You can also visit the vegetable garden of Casa Cerro da Correia. We have very entertaining suggestions to spend time in an educational way in the garden, so that children and adults discover the farming of mountain and local products. We are available to support in whatever is needed, from suggestions to prepare the trip and stay to solve the problems that arise. Serra da Estrela mountain is a Unesco Geopark since September 2019. The county of Manteigas is the only one that has all its territory inside the Serra da Estrela Natural Park. The village is located in the Zêzere Glacier Valley and surrounded by a gorgeous natural environment. This combination of factors makes it an ideal place to discover nature, photographing or practicing all kinds of sports (hiking, climbing, road or mountain biking, trail running ...).
