It is a small and peaceful traditional farming village with a real sense of community, a village green, red squirrels and pub that serves great food and drink! During the middle ages, Winton was at the centre of Sheep rearing in the Eden Valley. You may find that during your stay you have some friendly sheep in the field opposite the cottage! There are a couple of working farms in the village (one behind the cottage) so please do be mindful of that and keep dogs under control. Taking a left out of the Cottage will take you to the lovely Village Green with playground and picnic benches. Overlooking the Green is The Bay Horse pub. Heading right out of the Cottage will take you to Winton Common with far reaching views over the countryside and numerous public footpaths to explore. The popular market town of Kirkby Stephen is 1.5 miles away, an easy 5 minute drive, or a pleasant 35 minute walk. There you will find numerous independent shops, pubs, restaurants and tea rooms/cafes. Please take a look at my guidebook for further information on the local area.
