Corner Cottage, Great Broughton, Cumbria
The cottage is over 150 years old with walls 2 foot thick but has a very modern walk-in shower room and up to date kitchen. It is spacious, warm and homely - a veritable home away from home. All the basics that you may need are provided, including kitchen equipment, bedding, towels, soap, heating, lighting and power. There is a patio garden area to the rear of the cottage and off-street parking is available to the front. Once you book the use of the cottage is yours. It is a cottage with character....on 2 floors but with small stairs leading here and there. There is a cosy, homely feeling. With thick walls it is cool in the summer and warm in winter, although guest-controllable central heating in winter adds to the cosines. The off street parking is in a private courtyard used by 3 Houses. Space for one car is reserved for the cottage but if you have 2 cars, we can accommodate both with abit of discussion after you arrive. I visit my guests as soon as possible after they arrive to check they have everything and to point out that my house is just behind the cottage for emergencies. The cottage is in the centre of the village with 2 pubs, a post office and general store and a small bakery and general store, all in easy walking distance. The pubs generally only open towards the end of the week and weekends and are drinking establishments- not for food and meals. The nearest place for meals is the Broughton Craggs Hotel or the short drive to Cockermouth, which is full of a variety of pubs, restaurants and take-aways. Public transport in Cumbria is intermittent. The nearest train station is Maryport or workington, although buses and taxis from/to Great Broughton may be difficult. The nearest mainline station is Penrith, although Carlisle is a more important station. There are buses from both Penrith and Carlisle to Cockermouth, the nearest town and then taxi to Great Broughton. Travel to the nearest lake and see the mountain scenery close up and personal would involve a bus to Cockermouth and then another to Keswick You are strongly advised to bring your own or a hire car for visiting tourist sites, as with many rural locations public transport is sparse and sometime unreliable. Pets (within reason) are welcome but guests must ensure they do not cause any dirt or damage either within the cottage or to the patio garden. Any dog muck must be clean up by the guests and binned in outside bins.
