Llanwenarth Cottage nestles in 4 acres of lawned garden within the Usk Valley part of the Brecon Beacons National Park a mountainous region of outstanding natural beauty. The Cottage is bounded by the Sugarloaf with its vineyard on the lower slopes (wine tasting and cafe), Blorenge (popular with hang gliders) and Tilla mountains. The Brecon & Monmouthshire canal, 300 metres away winding along the Usk valley, is crossed via a timber bridge to access The Cottage. Abergavenny, the gateway to Wales is 4 miles away and is host to various festivals throughout the year such as the Steam Rally in May, Cycling Festival in July, and famed Abergavenny Food Festival in September. Monmouthshire Golf Club is 10 minutes down the road. We are fortunate to have a Waitrose supermarket less than 5 minutes away on the outskirts of Abergavenny. The Cottage is near to the World Heritage Site of Blaenavon Ironworks and the adjacent Big Pit Mining Museum where you can be taken underground by ex-miners in the original winding gear lifts and then enjoy stunning views across the Usk Valley towards the Sugarloaf as you descend from Blaenavon back to Govilon. Crickhowell voted Best High Street in the UK which uniquely, other than for Boots Chemist, is a nearby (6 miles) town where all businesses are independently owned and which hosts the January Walking Festival, May Choral Festival, August Green Man Music Festival and September Literary Festival. The Cottage itself consists of entrance hall, lounge/dining room, kitchen and bathroom (shower only, no bath) and stairs to bedroom with adjacent toilet and washbasin. Guests can enjoy the whole of the garden area which contains a summerhouse, honesty bar, barbecue, croquet and various seating areas from which guests can enjoy the view. Guests are able to use the orchard area and pick the various fruits when in season. With Llanwenarth Lodge being attached to The Cottage we are always available to meet and greet our guests and ensure they are properly settled in. For the majority of the time we are available to answer any queries and provide local information. We are always pleased to join guests at the bar or for barbecues and a game of croquet if they so desire. Llanwenarth Cottage is 4 miles from Abergavenny, a busy but unruffled market town with lots of interesting shops, pubs and local eateries, famous for its food festival in September and is 14 miles from the Cathedral Town of Brecon with its annual Jazz Festival in August and Baroque Festival in October. Local restaurants include the nationally acclaimed Walnut Tree whose co-owner Shaun Hill ran the Merchant House Restaurant (won a few gongs) in Ludlow up to 2005, the Hardwick owned and cheffed by Stephen Terry of TV fame and the Angel Hotel Abergavenny which provides the most heavenly national award winning afternoon teas. The cottage is surrounded by some of the best potholing in the UK with over 130 miles of caves either immediately adjacent or within half an hours drive. Access restricted in most cases unless accompanied by a local guide. Monmouthshire is host to 9 castles, Abergavenny, Caldicot, Chepstow, Grosmont, Monmouth, Raglan, Skenfrith, Usk and White Castle, all of which are within a 35 minutes drive from The Cottage. The Celtic Manor host to the 2010 Ryder Cup is within 30 minutes drive and the vibrant capital city of Wales, Cardiff, less than 40 miles away. A car is essential if you wish to visit the many and varied attractions further afield but there are local walks/cycle routes/canal towpath within easy access. Though there is a local bus service from the bottom of the drive into Abergavenny, a car is essential if guests wish to visit the many and varied places of interest in the surrounding National Park. A train service operates from Abergavenny to Hereford/Birmingham and to Newport/Cardiff. The area is renowned for walking and cycling and there are many public footpaths/cycle routes in the immediate vicinity so appropriate footware is a must for anyone intending to take advantage of these or the more strenuous mountain ways.
