Shelter Belt is an eco-cabin situated within a fern glade at the base of Mt. Misery. The cabin offers absolute privacy for those who seek it — ideal for couples celebrating a special occasion or or individuals needing a breather. Shelter Belt is pretty self sufficient. For warmth, there's a wood fire and stockpile of timber underneath the deck. Water is sourced from Calla Creek, hence the rich tannins present in the water, shower and the outdoor bath. Power is supplied by the sun and stored in 2 x 12v lithium batteries. Hot water is supplied by gas tanks. The composting loo will eventually turn your waste into fertiliser too. Frequent guests to Shelter Belt include pademelons, wallabies, quolls, bandicoots and a host of birdlife including lyrebirds, so unfortunately your pets can’t come along. I'm available 24/7 by phone and have a manager on-site to aid in any queries. Besides the sclerophyll forest surrounding Shelter Belt, down the road in Ranelagh there's the Summer Kitchen Bakery who provide amazing coffee and pies (plenty of vegan options too). The Huon River hugs the southern boundary of Ranelagh and provides an ideal place for kayaking, swimming and fishing. Willie Smith's Apple Shed is a short drive out of town, and not much further along is the Longley Hotel. Both are great for meals and drinks. Shelter Belt is best accessed by car as there are few public transport options. Just up the road is a trail head for access to the peak of Mt. Misery — a highly recommended walk.
