Jen's Safe, Comfy Guest Room, Close to City
Our quiet home offers you a private, comfortable bedroom, leisurely living spaces and two sensible housemates, with meals by arrangement. Do you need a temporary place to stay for some reason? Unless you are in a Covid “at risk” category, you are welcome to join us. Your bedroom has a queenside bed (and extra single mattress). You share a bathroom with your host Jen. We clean thoroughly, have sensible house rules and offer a private space to think and study. Stays longer than 1 month OK. Our house is comfortably furnished with the casual, tropical pieces that Mama Jen brought home from her humanitarian work overseas. It's a well-kept older home with a large modern extension, which includes our biggest living space, kitchen and bathrooms. We have two separate living areas (one large, including big couches, a dining area and a bar, the other quiet and reflective), with R/C air-conditioning and good wifi. There is a big modern shared kitchen, pantry, dining space, two clean bathrooms, and a separate laundry with washing machine which you are welcome to use. We have a private, lawned back garden and secure off-street parking. Your lovely bedroom has a friendly feel with polished hardwood floors and plenty of natural light. You have a comfortable queen bed, a desk and great built ins to store your belongings. (Even with an extra mattress for a third person, you won't feel crowded.) We have two good sized bathrooms; one is heritage style with shower, bath and modern fittings, the other totally modern with shower. You will share one bathroom, probably with Mama Jen. Towels, pillows, sheets and quilt are provided. All living spaces are yours to use. We've had guests from all over the world, of many different religions and cultures, but at the moment we’re pretty quiet. You will be sharing house with host Mama Jen and a new migrant who has decided to stay here quietly and work from home until Covid goes away and his wife can join him (she's stayed back to care for her mother). Jen has just finished 10 years working/ volunteering in Asia Pacific region and usually does catering. At the moment, she’s taking the opportunity to learn some new skills, so fresh baked breads and buns are often offered for breakfast and tea time. Other than that, she's mostly doing a LOT of on-line volunteering for Red Cross, to keep herself occupied. We are all very conscious of keeping things clean, and we expect everyone to help with this at the moment. We also have a very special 6 year old Abyssinian cat called Habibi (which means My Love in Arabic). Habibi loves people, but won't bother you. HE CAN'T GO OUTSIDE, so please be very alert when coming and going! The kitchen is spacious enough for people to prepare separate meals, but we're good cooks and often share a glass of wine, a meal and conversation. If you want some evening meals provided, we can "pay as you go". If Mama Jen is at home and cooking something special (pulled pork soft tortilla, prawn laksa, African chicken), you will get an sms, in case you want to join her. Feel free to ask what's cooking! These are challenging times and we are trying our best to stay sane and be good house mates with each other. Whatever is happening, you'll always be welcome to join in, but we won’t get in your way if you need peace and quiet. There are two quite separate living spaces, so there's always space for someone to be solitary when they wish :-). We are just north of Adelaide city - 5.5 kilometres (3.5 miles) - in a quiet, pretty street, with simple, fast bus connection to the city centre a short walk away.. The house is 10 minutes walk from trendy Queen/ Elizabeth Street where you can pick up takeaways from various restaurants and cafes (Red Door, Queen Street Cafe, La Lorientaise), and close to good supermarkets and two lovely parks with tennis courts and children's play equipment. We are very close to the bus that goes direct to the city - you'll be there in 15-20 minutes. A lot of neighbours bicycle to work or university, and there's a bicycle you may be able to borrow while you are here. There is a picturesque bike/ walking trail that goes from the city to Port Adelaide; it’s 10 minutes walk from here at its closest point. Mama Jen is fit and active, but she's 66 y.o., so we don't take chances with her health. Her son visits sometimes, but he's also in quiet lockdown. We have enough indoor space that we can keep good "social distance" apart when the occasional extra person comes to visit. If we're not sure, there's a sheltered front veranda for a coffee with a friend. We find that guests sleep, work and go out at different hours, so we usually say "Quiet space" in the front half of the house, including the front living room, if anyone else is sleeping. We recycle and do our best to care for our environment. South Australia is a very dry state, so we also conserve water where we can. So: 1. We will ask you NOT to bring plastic bottled water to the house, except in your own bottle. We have PLENTY of glass bottles you can use, and healthy filtered water. 2. We'll show you where compost bin and recycling containers are; please use them and help take them outside. 3. We'll ask you to capture the cold shower water in the bucket provided, instead of watching it go down the drain while you wait for the hot water to arrive. In the spring and summer, that water goes on the herbs and flowers in the pot plants outside (and yes, you can use any herbs you wish for your cooking!). In autumn and winter, empty the water bucket into the washing machine in the laundry. If you have any other suggestions for us, to help us protect our environment and conserve our precious resources, please let us know! Thanks
