Dellside is perfect for walkers, with spectacular coastal walks starting from the front door. The apartment is well stocked with maps, routes and walks to suit all abilities and levels. Safe external storage for bicycles. The apartment is self-contained and situated on the first floor, on the south side of the owners’ home. Information about the apartment and where everything is and how it works is all in one folder which will be left for you. Port Eynon was once a thriving harbour, exporting oysters, fish, limestone and salt to nearby Swansea and towns and cities on the Bristol Channel, which it overlooks. Its sheltered position allegedly made it a haunt of smugglers and at low tide a good place to explore is Culver Hole which is variously described as a huge pigeon loft (albeit accessible only from the seaward side of the cliff, completely hidden from view and half a mile away from the nearest house) and a smugglers’ hideaway for contraband goods. Port Eynon is a friendly and welcoming village. Numerous activities take place in the village hall throughout the year which are open to visitors ie; cinema club, food fayre and there is also the popular Cafe Cattwg which runs every Saturday morning in the church. There is a good village pub serving locally brewed craft beer and other refreshments plus meals, a family friendly restaurant and a couple of beachside fish and chips and a coffee shop. All of these are a genuine three-minute walk or less from our front door. The beach’s Blue Flag status means that it meets the stringent international standards of the Federation of Environmental Education’s Blue Flag criteria including standards for water quality, safety, environmental education and information During the summer season (1 May through to 30 September) the RNLI have Lifeguards patrolling the whole beach. Between 1 May and 30 September dogs are not allowed on the central part of the beach between the Lifeguard Hut, which is directly in front of the beach access from Port Eynon, and the Lifeboat station at Horton. Dogs are however allowed on the beach either side of this and there is ample exercise space, beach, rockpools and sea to be enjoyed both ends. The Port Eynon and Horton RNLI lifeboat is at the Horton end of the beach, with its own shop and there’s usually an open day in the summer when you can go and chat to the crew, see the boat and buy Welsh cakes and other goodies made by local supporters. All of the coastal paths around Gower are dog friendly but we ask you to follow the country code at all times. Sheep and cattle at times graze right up to the cliff edges. There are a number of interesting historic sites just a short walk from Dellside. Culver Hole we have already mentioned. The Salthouse dates from the seventeenth century when salt was a valuable commodity and the low rainfall, sheltered environment and numerous rocky pools around Skysea on the western point of Port Eynon Bay, meant that harvesting it from the sea here made economic sense. Inevitably, the building’s position at the far end of the natural harbour mean that it too has an association with smuggling. The many pools around the Salthouse were also apparently used to sort and store oysters, before they were shipped to Swansea and thence to London. You’ll be lucky to find many oysters, but the pools still make for fabulous rockpooling and there are crabs and lobsters to be found at low tide. Gower is also a haven for watersports such as surfing, windsurfing, kite surfing, sailing and SUPs (SUPs can be hired locally from the Beach Cafe) Port Eynon is just under 16 miles from the centre of Swansea, or approximately 40 minutes by car. Buses run approximately every 90 minutes, though the service becomes less regular during the winter. Please note that if you are arriving by train and planning to complete the journey to Port Eynon by bus, the bus station is across town. Allow 10-20 minutes walking time. A minicab from the train station to Port Eynon should cost about £35. Roads on Gower can get busy during the peak summer period. The spine of Gower is called Cefn Bryn and is used for common grazing land. Cows, ponies and sheep freely roam and drivers need to take care as animals are often on the road. Most of the roads are either A or B roads, which means that they are very, very pretty for cycling, but can be challenging, especially out of season, when local drivers are not slowed down by farm tractors and cautious visiting drivers! There are a number of excellent trails suitable for mountain biking. Gower is a walkers paradise with walk suitable for all abilities. A favourite of ours is the seven-mile walk from Dellside to Rhossili, which has breathtaking scenery all the way to the famous Worms Head. Serious walkers may want to refresh themselves at the Worms Head Hotel, before walking back! Otherwise check the bus times for the return journey. All bed linen and towels provided Welcome pack on arrival Ironing Board, Iron and Hair Dryer provided. There is no food shop in the village. There is a very good mini-market in Scurlage (two miles) and another at Knelston Texaco (four miles). Sainsburys, Asda and Tesco all deliver. Dellside is a first floor apartment, access by an external flight of stairs with bilateral handrails and is not suitable for wheelchair access. The steps are steep so not suitable for guests with limited mobility. ( please see photo of stairs)
