Forest Hill is on its way up. With new cafes opening, improved transport links and attractive Victorian architecture, this suburb is rising in popularity. As its name suggests, Forest Hill benefits from a high vantage point and offers sweeping views over London Culture: The Grade II listed Horniman Museum and Gardens is one of London’s most interesting museums. Great parks: Forest Hill has no shortage of green open spaces with nature reserves, woodland, play areas and for keen gardeners there’s an allotment scheme. In the heart of Forest Hill, opposite the train station, Havelock Walk is the area’s creative community and is buzzing with energy. The live work units attract artists from across London and twice yearly the artists open their studios to the public. From this central spot, it’s easy to explore Forest Hill’s shops, cafes and gastro pubs. Set in 16 acres of parkland, the quirky Horniman Museum has a world-famous taxidermy collection and a mix of objects ranging from Asian puppets and Haitian voodoo altars to musical instruments and a giant walrus. Outside, the gardens are a green oasis with breathtaking panoramic views over the city. The Forest Hill Pools swimming baths have been recently renovated and offer two pools, a café and a spectators’ viewing area. Babur Indian Restaurant has been here for 27 years and is famous for its curries. The architecture here is predominantly Victorian with some contemporary brownfield new developments including live/work units. There are also lanes with intriguing detours, quaint passageways and private roads.
