The expansive floor-to-ceiling windows offer gorgeous views of the villa's infinity-edge plunge pool and of the river. The Elephant Villa has significant amounts of outdoor living space including a a pool terrace and a large back deck. The back deck has 2 teak lounge chairs for sun-bathing and offers outdoor seating with extraordinary views of the river. The villa honors the elephant, a symbol of good fortune. Waterland has a full-time staff of 10. There is an intercom in the villa to facilitate communication with the staff. Waterland is on a unique site, with a river on one side, a canal on the other, and views of the Indian Ocean on the horizon. This is a quiet place of extraordinary natural beauty. We encourage you to explore the area by foot and by boat. There is a boat dock on site and we can arrange two different boat trips from Waterland. One boat trip takes you north on the Dutch Canal to a scenic area called Waikal. This is an ideal trip for bird-watching. Along the way, you may see herons, egrets, cormorants, parakeets, bulbuls, robins, ... Watch a toddy tapper climb towering palm trees and have a glass of toddy (fermented coconut sap) with him. The other boat trip is longer and takes you south to Negombo Lagoon. This is an ideal trip for seeing village life along the water. Pass coconut plantations, rice paddies, and picturesque mangroves. Stop at one of Negombo's fish markets and at a Catholic Church on the lagoon. During your stay at Waterland, the staff can arrange transportation by car or by 3-wheelers. 3-wheelers are a colorful mode of local transportation. The staff can also arrange excursions to local places of interest or to other parts of Sri Lanka. We have bicycles on site that are free for guests to use. There are signs to Waterland around Negombo so that it is easy to find your way back to Waterland. We have a map with 2 bicycle routes to help guests explore.
