A short drive away are the pretty towns of La Rochelle and Saintes which has classical music festivals in high season, Cognac with distilleries and boat trips on the River Charente. Golf can be played at La Rochelle, Saintes and Cognac; there is a large water aqualand in St Jean d'Angely; a beach at Fouras, 35km, and a ferry can be taken to the island of Aix - the last retreat of Napoléon. For a day out, La Rochelle is famous for its old harbour as well as its aquarium and numerous cafés and seafood restaurants along the water.
