The Hut at Elm Tree Farm, Mansfield
The Hut at Elm Tree Farm is a place to switch off and reconnect with nature. It sits on 160 rolling acres and is surrounded by a 5000 acre working farm. It is an off grid restored shearer's hut with a separate bathroom/toilet and outdoor kitchen. USB charging is available. The hut operates on 12 volt power and gas is provided for water heating and cooking. There is a indoor fireplace for warmth and an outdoor firepit for fun. It is for guests who enjoy outdoor adventures! Note unfenced dams. The Hut was originally a shearer’s quarters. It was renovated by our neighbours and they used it as their accommodation during weekend stays while they were building their house that was featured on Grand Designs Australia. The Hut is featured in the opening of that episode! We were fortunate to purchase it along with 160 acres which now share with guests. The Hut contains a king size bed with lovely linen and cotton bedding. There is a sofa to curl up on in front of the fire and lots of throws to keep you snug! You can also dine inside on our Victorian little dining table and contemplate the views from the large window that looks out onto the wider landscape. Please note it is off grid. There are electric lights and a USB charger. We have supplied lanterns for reading and going to the loo at night! Outside you can enjoy sitting on the verandah or take the camping chairs out to sit around the fire pit. The shower room is located off the main verandah. Towels are supplied. The mini fridge is also located there due to limitations with the solar power. The outdoor kitchen has a BBQ and a portable Coleman stove for cooking. It is a fly wired wooden structure and it reflects the outside temperature so rug up in Winter! The kitchen is well equipped but note this is a glamping kitchen. You will need to rug up in the colder months to cook but you can dine inside The Hut where it’s warm or beside the fire pit outside. We supply tea, coffee, milk, olive oil, balsamic and white vinegar and salt and pepper. There is also a herb bed and wicking bed. Please feel free to help yourselves. We also try and provide produce from our garden depending on what is in season. The loo is separate and lanterns are provided for night time visits or an umbrella if it rains. You can enjoy the bird life and walks on the property. Feel free to explore the 160 acres and enjoy a picnic in the paddock! It is a place to switch of and reconnect with nature but only a five minute drive to town if you want a bit more action! The Hut is about having some space, and getting back to basics. Just note that snakes are active during the warmer months. I recommend that guests don’t walk in the gullies from September until the end of April. There are slashed walking tracks in the paddocks. Guests are welcome to explore the 160 acres surrounding The Hut. Note it is a working farm so you may pass sheep and alpacas. There are also quite a few kangaroos around the gullies. The farm can only be accessed by foot or by bike. We live on the property but this won’t impact your privacy as we live about 1km away. However if problems arise we aren’t far away to help fix them. A text message should resolve any queries! Mansfield is situated 2.5 hours from Melbourne and 45 minutes to Mt Buller. We have a thriving community with many small businesses making our town a unique shopping and eating experience. There are fantastic hikes, bike rides, rivers, mountains, wineries and the Eildon weir to explore. It’s a great base from which you can explore all that the North East of Victoria has to offer! Our property is located approximately 4.5 km from town or a 5 minute drive. It is about a 15 minute bike ride and you often see cyclists taking an early morning ride from town and for a brisk morning ride. You can hire bikes from All Terrain Cycles. We often take our bikes on the car and leave the car at the rail trail and ride into town. It’s a lovely way to get in. Take your backpack to fill up with local produce! This is a working farm so you may occasionally see us but on the whole you will have privacy. Please pack warm clothes for the cooler months as it gets chilly up here and pack appropriate footwear for walks on the farm in Winter. We welcome pets but they need to be kept under control at all times. If you open a gate make sure you close it afterwards.
