West End is arguably the historic multi-cultural heart of Brisbane. Its shops, restaurants and bars reflect its immigrant and hippy roots and provide its eclectic charm. The big weekend market at Davies park sees sellers of olives, organic foods, oranges and gourmet take aways alongside the designers of clothes, shoes, toys, coffee, home made cakes and sweets and all to the sounds of live music. West End bars showcase aspiring musicians, sell craft beers and cocktails or provide a quiet space for people watching. There are dozens of restaurants showcasing food of the mediterranean, south east asia, africa, australia, india and a fusion of all cuisines. Coffee is big in West End - short, long, espresso or other, italian, french or fair trade. Need a frock, a suit, tie dye shirt, kimono, shoes, organic grocer, a newspaper, junk food - its all here! For a bit of down time walk along the river bank through Orleigh Park to Southbank for a swim and for more food, coffee and shopping. Our place is in the middle of West End. The city is a mere 15 minute walk for all the big shopping excursions and South Bank arts and cultural centre a 10 minute walk. Or catch a bus, the bus stop is a two minute walk away. The number 199 bus leaves every 10 minutes to the city centre or further on to Fortitude Valley. It will take 10 minutes to the city centre. The buses run just about 24 hours so you can see a show in Fortitude Valley and still get a bus home at 2 am. Or hire a city cycle (two minute walk) and see the sights using pedal power. If you have a car the freeway north to the Sunshine Coast (1 1/2 hours drive) or south (1 hour drive) to the Gold Coast is a 7 minute drive from our place. We are 17 minutes from Brisbane airport by car or 22 minutes by train to Roma Street station. If you arrive by plane then train it to Roma Street station - its is a 7 minute drive so by arrangement, most times I can pick you up. So that we can be here to welcome you please let us know about the time and how you will arrive in Brisbane.
