Situated within the medieval walls of one of the most significant and beautiful towns along the magnificent Dordogne river, our apartment is an elegant period house situated perfectly to access (within metres) all that this location has to offer. Restaurants, cafes, fishing, canoeing, swimming and hiking are just a few activities on offer. There is a lovely, typically French leafy town square, with two bustling bars to accommodate the locals. Several patisseries operate within the town and your main quest will be to determine which one is the best! There are a number of impressive restaurants operating within the village and they serve some very excellent nouvelle cuisine using fresh and seasonal ingredients at very reasonable prices. Supermarkets are close by and a weekly fresh produce market operates on Saturday mornings should you want to cook for yourself. There are two butchers in the village and every shop imaginable. The Tourist Office in Place Marbot is a great first stop to pick up relevant info. The town itself is steeped in history and began as a Benedictine community. The architecture in the centre of the Benedictine original community is stunning. The Abbey was added later and the two remaining massive stone gates are a constant reminder of the need for the village to be safe during the 100 years war and also throughout its history, from marauding Invaders. Indeed our house is just inside the Porte ( gate ) of Rue St Catherine and one could easily imagine you’d stepped into a movie set from the Middle Ages as you enter. Closer to the river is the iconic Chapel des Penitents soaring upward and providing the most stunning backdrop for photographs of the magnificent river. Walking through this delightful town is all pleasure. Drive to sites within 30 minutes through amazing countryside of rolling hills and valleys. These include many towns listed as "Les Plus Beaux Villages de France"..... Collonges la Rouges, Rocamadour, Loubressac, Autoire, Turenne, Curemonte, St Cere, Brive La Gaillarde, the wonderful cave-Gouffre de Padirac, Bretenoux, Castelnaud Bretenoux and many more. But really, if you don’t feel like driving, many hours can be whiled away in the town itself or walking along the pretty river’s edge. It is a haven for holiday makers from all over Europe. Your hosts are enthusiastic communicators and will go out of their way to assist you in getting to Beaulieu with suggestions of trains, car hire and airports close by. No question is too difficult. It’s good to note that through July and August the town hosts a Monday evening community barbecue by the river which is a wonderful event and includes food, wine, free barbecuing, live music and dancing. Beaulieu sur Dordogne has been a popular destination for holiday makers for decades and is known as the Riviera of the Correze. This is because the river is so wide and fast flowing at this point that it has been dammed to regulate the flow and it also has tributaries which have formed two distinct islands. These islands have become lovely camping grounds and because the water is refreshing and safe for swimming and also because fish, particularly trout, are plentiful, people travel from far and wide to holiday in Beaulieu which is situated in the Upper reaches of the Dordogne closer to the Massif Central and its source.
