Founded in 1869, it was renamed Przewalski in the Soviet era, in memory of the famous Russian explorer, but gained the original name back upon the collapse of the USSR. Soviet influence still resonates today. Within town, we have: THE DUNGAN MOSQUE, built by exiled Chinese Muslims, completely in wood and without a single nail! THE HOLY TRINITY CATHEDRAL, an Russian Orthodox church also built with wood. JAKSHILIK BAZAR & BAZAR AK TILEK, two highly bustling markets where anything is for sale. THE ANIMAL MARKET, where animals can be bought and sold (Sunday morning, begins at 5am). For lions and porcupines however, we have Kyrgyzstan's only ZOO. Humane but a very simple affair. Karakol's trump card is its surroundings: TERSKEY ALATAU and TIAN SHAN mountain ranges KARKARA VALLEY TOMB and MUSEUM OF NIKOLAY PRZEWALSKI ISSYK-KUL, the second highest Alpine lake ALTYN ARASHAN hot springs KARAKOL VALLEY KASHKA SUU ski resort JETI-OGUS, including its gorge and sanitorium, and the nearby VALLEY OF THE FLOWERS BARSKOON VALLEY with it famous waterfalls And the road to the infamous KUMTOR GOLD MINE All buses from Bishkek arrive to the North Bus station, where taxis and mashrutkas can drive you around the town (to reach us, just walk straight down Lencom street for twenty-five minutes). The South Bus Station and mashrutkas that go into the surrounding villages - and towards Issyk-Kul - can be found within the centre of town. Around the intersection along Lenin and Toktogul street. We offer free coffee and tea all day. The Guesthouse is located nearby to the Victory Park (Park Pobeda), the University and the three main streets of Karakol: Lencom, Telman and Gebze. You can arrive in the center of Karakol in 5 min by taxi or in 15 min on foot.
