Les Chambres Chouettes - Canigou
Welcome to our characterful village house, just outside the walls of the medieval Villefranche de Conflent, with its fine collection of bars, restaurants, craft shops, and signposted walks, all watched over by the magnificent Fort Liberia. We are an hour's drive from the ski resorts, in one direction and the seaside in the other. The railway station is 15 minutes walk and has a mainline to Perpignan as well as the wonderful narrow-gauge Train Jaune, which winds its way up into the mountains. This is a lovely sunny room, at the front of the house, with double patio doors onto the traditional balcony, where you can eat your breakfast, on an elegant bistro set, listen to the birds and watch the hikers setting off for the hills. The windows are fitted with original wooden shutters, to keep things cool, dark and quiet, when you want to. Your bedroom is furnished with retro 60s French furniture, plus a modern, ensuite walk-in shower, basin and toilet. The bedding is cotton and there are plenty of feather and fiber-fill pillows. With the environment in mind, all rooms have reverse air conditioning/heating and the hot water comes via an air source heat pump. Breakfast is plentiful, with lots of fresh fruit, bread, pastries and homemade jams and yoghurt. There is a coffee machine on the shared landing, where you collect your breakfast, but you also have tea and coffee-making facilities in your room. Free parking on our quiet little street. The 1 euro buses are a 10-minute level walk away. It is another 5-minute walk to the railway station for the 1 euro mainline train to Perpignan and the narrow-gauge Train Jaune to the mountains and the Spanish border. Howard or I are generally around, in our garden, or on the middle floor, where we live; please ring the bell. You can walk to Fort Liberia, Chapelle Notre-dame de vie, the Vauban fortifications and Vernet-les-bains from our doorstep. Many other walks nearby. There is something for everyone in our village restaurants, bars and shops. You can get the 1 euro bus or train to Perpignan and another euro will get you to the coast. The wonderful train jaune will take you up into the mountains; prices vary. The 1 euro bus follows a similar route to the Spanish border. Service wash available.
