Fairytale Castle - Close to Alton Towers!
Stay in fabulous fairy tale Castle Turrets surrounded by a castle moat! Spring and Summer - be quick to secure your spot. Limited availability. Caverswall Castle is a stunning Grade I-listed property built in the early 17th century on the site of a 13th century castle. One of the few remaining castles in England surrounded by a moat. Home to the Wedgwood family in the late 19th Century. Book for group of up to 12 persons. We have some flexibility on the bedroom arrangements so please ask. The Castle is truly unique - there is nothing else like it in Staffordshire. You can stay in one of 4 self-contained stone castle turrets, each with views of the moat and wildlife. Where a turret is not available, we can accommodate you in one of the main Castle’s ensuite bedrooms. Please note that the pricing of nightly rate is per Turret building. For example, if you book all 4 Turret buildings then the price would be nightly rate x 4 and cleaning fee. If you book all 4 Turrets then a maximum of 16 people can stay. In the each of the turrets there is a sofa bed in the downstairs lounge area that sleeps 2 guests each turret, thus converting the lounge to a sleeping studio for 2 guests at night plus the king or queen sized bed that sleeps 2 on the level above. All guests share the bathroom on the level above where the second level bedroom is located. Each Turret is two levels accessed by an internal metal spiral / wooden staircase. All have modern kitchenette and bathrooms with shower and toilet. The one bathroom in the upstairs level bedroom is shared by all guests in that turret. All are centrally heated and fitted with free wifi and 50” TV. We also have bedrooms in the main Castle for guests who cannot share a bed with another guest in their party. That allows us to accommodate up to 26 guests assuming two guests per bed. Also if ever a turret is not available for your stay (example for renovation or repair) we will accommodate you in the main Castle bedrooms that have their own ensuite bathroom. Please see the listing photos for some examples of bedrooms in the main Castle. Other than providing access to some bedrooms as noted above and access to the lower ground floor (lounge room, billiards room and dining room for up to 26 guests), the main Castle building is private and is occupied by your hosts. Kindly observe the “privacy - no admittance” signs to those areas of the Castle that are off limits. However, we would be pleased to invite you into the main Castle for tea or coffee in the Castle reception room, principal dining room or the “Wedgwood” library, with period features from the 17 Century - a truely unique and memorable experience. As spaces are limited for this peek into the Castle’s principal historic rooms please message us in advance to reserve your spot. There is no extra charge for this viewing and the tea and coffee in these areas of main Castle are also free as part of your viewing. The lower ground floor dining room (separate from the ground floor main Castle dining room) is available for a special dinner on a self-catered basis. This comes as a free package with the adjoining full sized billiards room and lounge surrounded by sandstone walls built in 1610 - very atmospheric and the essence of what a castle is all about. Your accommodation in the Castle Turrets is accessed across a 17th Century stone bridge over the moat, through the Castle gates and located within the inner courtyard of the Castle. You will have access to the landscaped Castle inner courtyard gardens with picturesque views across the moat and Castle grounds. Your free parking is directly in front of your Turret on the circular drive. BBQ facilities are also available for you in the Castle inner courtyard with private outdoor seating for your individual Turret. Please ask your host where everything is located if you are not sure where it is. Alton Towers as well as the Peak District are a short drive away. You will have exclusive access to your own individual self-contained Castle Turret and immediate garden area around it. You will have shared access to the Castle inner courtyard garden. We can invite you into the main Castle for tea and coffee. If you want to take up this option then please message us in advance to reserve your spot. The tea and coffee in the main Castle reception room, in the Wedgwood library or in the Castle dining room is free. You will be met by our on-site co-host Mandy who will provide you with access to your Turret, explain the house rules and answer any questions you may have. If you have any questions during your stay or have any difficulties at any time, please contact your host as soon as possible so we can promptly attend to your needs. We store some of the facilities on site to keep them safe, so if you want to use some facilities and can’t find them, then please contact your host who will be happy to help. Caverswall village is located in the county of Staffordshire which is centrally based for all transport links giving access to the rest of the UK. The village has a population of less than 1000 inhabitants and has a mixture of residential houses, a primary school, a village hall and St Peters Church, all of which give a sense of local community. Foxfield railway, just outside the village, runs a heritage steam traction along the former branch line to Foxfield Colliery. Alton Towers theme park and the Peak District are a short drive away. The village has excellent connections to the A50, providing access to the city of Stoke-onTrent and the market town of Uttoxeter. Larger cities such as Derby can also be easily accessed from the A50 and junctions 15 and 16 of the M6 motorway from the A500. A Brief History: It is believed that Caverswall Castle may date back to a Saxon Manor house. In 1275 Sir William De Caverswall was granted a "licence to cenellate" to create the moat and build a keep from the tributanes. In the 1600's, several families owned the Castle and in 1615, after the Castle had fallen into disrepair, it was re-worked by a wealthy Merchant, Matthew Craddock, the Mayor of Stafford. The Castle survived the English Civil War and was de-commissioned under Oliver Cromwell. Sir Percival Radcliffe owned the Castle in the mid nineteenth century and added gardens and re-installed the moat. On three occasions the Wedgewood family resided at the Castle. In 1891 Mr W E Bowers acquired the property and added a new wing known as The Moathouse. More recently the Castle has undergone major restoration and renovation works, retaining historic features yet adding a touch of modern luxury facilities. The current owners purchased the Castle in March 2021. We are privileged to own such an important property of historic significance and we take great care to preserve its many unique and beautiful features. We are delighted to share this experience with you through your stay at the Castle and we will work hard to ensure your stay is truly memorable. We hope to welcome you back regularly! Directions: From the M6 Motorway: leave at junction 15, take the A500 towards Stoke-on-Trent, exit on the A50 towards Uttoxeter.
