Caldicot is a small town close to the M4 & M5 motorways so easy reach of Cardiff, Bristol, Gloucester etc. Caldicot hosts several cafes, pubs, restaurants and take-a-ways, as well as supermarkets if you prefer to cater for yourselves. We are in walking distance of Caldicot Castle which is set in extensive parkland. Its origins are Norman, but it was largely restored in the 19th century to create a charming building which combines building styles through the centuries. The castle is open to the public and also hosts a range of shows and events throughout the year. David Broome Event Centre is just 1 mile down the road. Close to Caldicot are the remains of an even older settlement, the ancient Roman town of Venta Silurum, now in the village of Caewent. The large number of ruined buildings are some of the best preserved in Britain, and in some areas the defensive walls are around 5m high. Domestic details such as the underfloor heating, or Hypocaust, survive in the remains of one of the town houses. Also close by are the hidden gardens and grottos of Dewstow House. The gardens were originally built around 1900 but were buried after WWII, they were rediscovered in 2000 and have now been renovated. The gardens contain many ponds and rills but interestingly a labyrinth of underground grottoes, tunnels and sunken ferneries. The rock gardens are made up of a mixture of real stone and faced stone using various types of Pulhamite. Nearby golf courses are St Pierre and the Celtic Manor Resort. The medieval town of Chepstow is just 5 miles away, here you'll find many bars & restaurants, gift shops, cobbled streets, and the starting points for the Wye Valley Walk, the Wales Coastal Walk, and Offa's Dyke. Your own car is advisable, although local buses provide access to Newport, Chepstow and Bristol, there is also a train station just 15 mins walk away This is a first floor apartment with internal stair access.
