Bergerac Cottage, A serene Country Hideaway
Bergerac Cottage is an ancient stone farm building situated between Bergerac and the Unesco village of St Emilion. Five minutes from the historic riverside two of Ste Foy la Grande famous for it's Saturday market and other beautiful bastide villages such as Issigeac and Eymet . The spectacular 27 hole golf course, Chateau des Vigiers, is just a stones throw from the house as are many well known vineyards. Nestled amongst fields of grapevines and sunflowers in the Bordeaux wine region of France Bergerac Cottage provides a serene hideaway. The adjoining farm is organic and no chemical fertilisers or insecticides are sprayed on the crops. The rustic two bedroom cottage, originally built as a wine store, has recently been renovated and styled to provide a spaciously elegant open plan living area with a new kitchen. One bedroom has an enclosed veranda with stunning countryside views, perfect for an early morning cup of coffee. Alternatively coffee can be served at the table in the private garden. Guests are renting the entire house and have full access. I live in a barn on the property and will be available to assist you in anyway I can. Having only lived here for 18 months I am still enjoying exploring this region. On Saturday mornings I make my way to the Ste Foy la Grande market which is listed as one of the best produce markets in France. Stalls of locally grown vegetables and wines, flowers, live chickens ready for the pot (if you can bare to kill them yourself....not for me!), fish and shell fish, cheeses, bread, gateaux, flowers, clothing, and of course foie gras, take over most of the ancient bastide town. Once my bag is full I enjoy sitting at a local bar to people watch and sip on an expresso. On Sundays morning I drive to the Issigeac market or to brocante or vide grenier markets in the surrounding villages and hunt for treasures. Driving home we stop at one of the many country restaurants for lunch, or just as pleasant have a picnic lunch beside the Dordogne river. I am yet to hire a canoe and cruise down the river enjoying the spectacular countryside views, however several of my guests have and have thoroughly enjoyed it. There are also electric bikes for hire from the Office de Tourism in Ste Foy la Grande, however I prefer to jump in the car and visit the local vineyards, with their imposing chateau, and enjoy a wine tasting. We are in the countryside, 4 km from Pineuilh and 7 km from Ste Foy la Grande, therefore it would be advisable to have a car.
