The Camel House, Benenden
This gem of a cottage is tucked away in an old apple orchard in the heart of the Kent countryside. The cottage is self-catering, but with so many wonderful places to eat within a few minutes' drive, there's no need to cook. The Bull public house at Benenden which serves excellent meals. Nearby star attractions include: Sissinghurst gardens, Great Dixter gardens. Bodiam Castle, Bateman's - Rudyard Kipling's beautiful home, Hastings Old Town and Tenterden Railway. The cottage is called The Camel House because the owner has spent a life-time saving a rare species of double-humped camel in Mongolia and China. Access available to all open spaces. There are no camels on the property but plenty of camel interest on the property as the host runs the Wild Camel Protection Foundation, a registered charity in the UK. I shall be available most of the time. The neighbourhood comprises a typical English village - with a pub, a shop, a post office, a butcher, a village green and a church. These can all be reached on foot by a fit walker. By road (2 miles) there is a wonderful farm shop which is a mini super market and a little further on a fishmongers which sells fresh fish and is visited by people from miles around. Parking at The Camel House is not a problem and is off the road and out of sight. Public transport to neighbouring villages is a available from the village of Benenden. The warm and cosy AGA does all the cooking and also heats the whole cottage. No other heating needs to be put on. In very hot weather the AGA cam be turned off and replacement hotplates, cooker and toaster are provided. Every guest - so far - has loved the AGA.
