***Off of Hwy 118 -3 Miles of dirt roads without street signs/lights Mesa Vista is a 1-room, "off-the-grid" cabin w/2 lofts located 24 miles north of Terlingua, Tx and Big Bend National Park. It has a queen-sized bed, 2 side tables, 1 shelf, and 2 chairs. One loft has a queen-sized memory foam mattress. One loft is for storage. We're a 'Dark Sky' designated area. To keep our rates low, our guests will continue to clean/sanitize for next guests. Please read the ENTIRE listing info carefully. **May-Sept. is our HOT SEASON. Temps can get in the 100s during the day and not cool off much at night until the wee hours of the morning. During June - Sept., the temps have gotten as high as 113. Water intake needs to be doubled most of the Hot season, and short hikes, with time in the shade, are best. NO AIR CONDITIONING AVAILABLE. NO WATER OR ELECTRICITY Let me tell you about Mesa Vista. (Read the reviews. People love this place.) IT'S CAMPING WITH A BEDROOM! Lots of stars, blazing sunsets and sunrises, quiet... Mesa Vista is located in one of the last "dark sky" designated areas. There is no light pollution and it's not uncommon to see the Milky Way on moonless nights. Mesa Vista is a tiny 10' x 15' off-the-grid cabin located in Big Bend Valley. It's a rustic, small, wooden one-room cabin with lots and a small porch. A short walk away is the water-free toilet building, big enough for one person at a time, and the outdoor 5 gallon camping solar water bag shower. There is a queen-sized bed with memory foam mattress (NO BEDDING PROVIDED), a metal table with shelf, 2 bedside tables, and a couple of chairs. There is a queen-sized memory foam mattress (NO BEDDING PROVIDED) in one loft which is accessed by a permanent wooden ladder. The other loft is good for storage. Mesa Vista is NOT AIR-CONDITIONED. There is a small, portable propane heater available which heats the cabin comfortably. There is NO ELECTRICITY at the cabin. NO WATER. We have a "Bring Your Own" format which includes a "Clean for the Next Guest" policy. You must leave the property in clean, rentable condition and haul out your trash. You review depends on this. We ask you to let us know what kind of condition the property was in when you arrived so that we can rate the previous guest. This way we keep our rates low. *UPDATE - CLEANING DURING COVID - You will need to sanitize high touch surfaces like door knobs, table tops and bathroom counter/toilet top area before you leave. Outside, there is a cooking and 'hang out" area with a table and 3 chairs. Relax with the beverage of your choice and watch the sunset reflect off of the mountains or watch the stars at night. 9 Point Mesa, Black Hill, Red Bluff and the Christmas Mountains are all in view from the comfy front porch. There is a rock fire pit for use when there is no wind or burn ban. WATERLESS TOILET This is similar to a port-a-potty, except you will place compost material (we provide) into the trash-bag-lined toilet bucket after each use. You will empty the bucket, as needed, in the "dumpster" out next to the red storage building. During clean up at the end of your stay you will empty contents of the bucket and get it ready for the next guest with a trash bag and scoops of compost. We will send instructions in your Airbnb messages. WE provide: - Mr. Budd (Website hidden by Airbnb) BTU portable indoor/outdoor propane heater in cabin - Propane camp stove - Ice chest - 1 frying pan - 1 small pot - 1 outdoor 5-gallon solar water bag shower, shower curtain (surrounded by wooden wall) - Composting material for waterless toilet - Broom YOU provide: - Water for drinking, cooking, showering, hiking, cleaning - Food - 16 oz. propane bottles for camp stove and indoor heater - All bedding and pillows - Towels, if needed - Toilet paper, paper towels - Hand sanitizer -Trash bags for cabin, bathroom and outdoor large trash can - Flashlights/headlamps You'll have the run of the cabin area, the porch, and the five acres of Big Bend beauty, as well as thousands of acres to visually enjoy. Feel free to hike the desert roads and explore Big Bend Valley. As long as you stay on the road, you'll be fine. About once a year we get a heavy rain of such magnitude that you can't drive on the dirt roads. This area is in a designated dark-sky area. At night there is no light pollution (or cell tower or power line radiation) so the stars are close and huge. The outdoor (solar) shower and toilet are in a separate area nearby. Note: we are about 3 miles from Hwy 118 in the Chihuahua desert. There is desert wildlife- snakes, javelinas, jack rabbits, fluffy bunnies, coyotes. In the 10 years we've been out here, we've seen 2 rattlesnakes. At night, you may get to hear a concert by the coyotes. They're shy and you probably won't see them, but their singing is pretty amazing. You can see our cabin from your cabin and you can walk to our place in a minute or so. If we aren't at home and you need us, please message us on Airbnb. We do check our Airbnb account frequently through the days that we have guests, even when we're traveling. There is reliable public internet at the Little Burro Store, 3 miles away. If we're home, we have a land-line phone at our home to be used only in case of an emergency. Internet is also available when we're here, but it is optional. Some of our guests prefer to not be distracted and request that we turn it off. Internet service at the cabin can be sketchy and inconsistent. *NOTE - Our cabin is in Big Bend Valley, 27 miles NORTH of Terlingua, TX off of Hwy. 118. The Airbnb map here is of the area in and around the city of Terlingua, TX. If you enjoy Big Bend National Park, you'll enjoy the view in Big Bend Valley. Mesa Vista is 3 miles off Hwy 118. Usually, there is very little traffic during the day or night. It's quiet, secluded, peaceful and gorgeous. The Little Burro Store, about 3 miles from the cabin on Hwy. 118, usually has public WiFi, food, firewood, beer, wine, propane, water and some camping supplies. Stock can be limited. The store is part of JackAss Flats. Big Bend Valley was once inhabited by Apache Indians and occasionally you'll encounter arrowheads and other artifacts. Terlingua/Study Butte area: There are restaurants, bars, food trucks, desert/river tour guide business, and the famous Terlingua Ghost Town. Terlingua / Study Butte and the west entrance to Big Bend National Park are south about 27 miles on Hwy 118. The turn off of Hwy 118 to the cabin is approx. 52 miles south from Alpine, Texas. There is no public transportation here. We're 52 miles from the nearest doctor/hospital in Alpine. Terlingua does have an EMS service that is 30 miles away. NO smoking in the cabin or on the property. No exceptions. Dogs must NOT be left in the cabin without you. No exceptions. NO cats allowed. The dirt roads to the cabin have no street signs or lights, so you might want to show up during the daylight hours. The main road to the cabin is marked with concrete pyramids- after you book, we'll send you complete and detailed instructions. Keep and eye on the weather forecasts. We use Wunderground, Terlingua, under Terllingua, change location to Jackass Flats
