Guests may also request for the keys to be delivered to KKB - depending on host availability. Kuala Kubu Bharu is a charming little town at the foothills of Bukit Fraser in Hulu Selangor. Also known as 'KKB' by locals, the town began life as a mining colony in the 18th Century. Later, it housed a fortress built by warring Sultans during a period of civil war before falling into colonial hands. KKB was originally situated between two tributaries of the Selangor River, but a massive flood in 1883 wiped out the entire town infrastructure, claiming 33 lives including District Magistrate and Revenue Collector Sir Cecil Ranking. The town was then moved to its present location on hilly terrain, surrounded by lush valleys, to prevent further tragic recurrences. You can see the mountain range from this pleasant and quiet town. There are a few rows of shophouses which are about 80 years old, many of which had been renovated and re-painted. Try some of the food and go sight seeing within the vicinity. Here are some of them. It has vestiges from the colonial era, traditional shop lots and classic dishes, KKB is one of the places to be for travellers to relive the nostalgic old Malaya lifestyle. When being in KKB, it is recommended that travellers take a relaxing stroll around the Millennium Park; Kuala Kubu Road Old Railway Station for its old world feel; the ruins of the old KKB Police Station that was affected by the great tragic flood in 1883 due to the broken dam; and the historic Al-Hidayah Old Mosque with the inscription of the year 1926. KKB has retained most of its charm with traditional and quaint shophouses, a 1930s clock tower and an old fire station. A Buddhist temple that survived the flood was refurbished in the 1980s and is also another attraction while Cecil Ranking’s grave might be a stop for those interested in KKB’s history. A monument was also built in the town to commemorate the KKB flood. Colonial shop houses still make up most of KKB’s architectural landscape, spanning from the 1920s to the 1980s, which makes it ideal for pleasant walking tours. Its grid-like streets are made up of sundry shops, eateries, a traditional barber and even a former cinema, converted into an entertainment centre. Visitors can also enjoy the cool weather as KKB is surrounded by lush trees and tropical jungle. Cyclist enthusiasts can be seen especially during the weekend wondering the KKB environment and finally taking a break/rest at the Mamak corner shop in the town. Typical tourist attractions that can be explored in KKB include a tourist information centre and the old railway station. There are a few budget hotels, a golf course, bus terminal and train station, but not much else exists in terms of infrastructure and facilities. Whitewater rafting is one of the main activities here at Sungai Selangor. Chilling waterfalls can also be visited, but care must be taken at all times especially during raining season. Golfers will be glad to know that KKB Golf and Country Club is available for your use.
