Cedro - A cottage surrounded by nature!

Surrounded by forest and located up high in the mountains, Cedro cottage is the ideal choice for nature lovers, who seek peace and unique moments in the comfort of a well-equipped cottage. Its privileged location within the natural park of Ribeiro Frio, allows access to many "Veredas" and "Levadas", and reveals up close the beauty of the Laurissilva forest. One of the three Ribeiro Frio Cottages, Cedro is a two storey cottage surrounded by forest and well placed in the mountains of Santana. Its privileged location, allows access to many hikes in this region, including the famous Vereda dos Balcões, the three highest peaks of Madeira, Pico Ruivo, Pico das Torres and Areeiro, among others. When you arrive at the entrance of the property, you will see the cottages on the other side of the valley, and the mountains above them. Take a moment to breath the fresh air while watching that beautiful landscape before you enter the private road up to the cottages. In the middle of the road, you will pass a small bridge with a view to the small seasonal brook that feeds Ribeiro Frio, before arriving at the automatic gate that gives you access to the gardens and the parking space. A small garden on your right along with the small stone path that leads to the picnic area marks the end of the road and beginning of the parking lot just above. Once you arrive to the parking space you will see Cedro, the first cottage and its surroundings, the barbecue is just a few steps after the doorway. Inside the cottage on your left, you can see the fully prepared kitchen. In the middle, a small space and the stairwell to the second floor. On your left you will find the living room where a wood burning stove and couch welcomes Cedro's guests with a feeling of coziness. Going to the second floor, you can see a window with a beautiful view to the valey and mountains, the bathroom is just on the right side and the bedroom on the left. The bedroom decoration with soft lights, wooden floor and the comfortable beds, create a simple and relaxing atmosphere suitable to relax after a long day of hikes. Cedro's first house rule is make yourself comfortable and enjoy your stay! Besides the entire cottage for your exclusive access, you also have access to these common areas: Laundry room equipped with a washer/ dryer, detergent and softener are provided. Private road and parking space. Gardens. Picnic area. Firewood store. Trash store. Barbecue. 117,000 square meters of property with mix Laurissilva forest and fruit trees. I do not live at the cottages, but I live at Funchal 30 to 35 minutes away if anything is needed. I always ask for my guests to reach me immediately by message or phone if anything is wrong, malfunctioning or broken. Among other areas of interest, we highlight Poiso, Pico do Areeiro, Ribeiro Frio trout nursery, Ribeiro Frio Natural Park, Funchal Ecological Park and the two trails PR10 (Ribeiro Frio - Portela 11Km) and PR11 (Vereda dos Balcões 1,5 Km). By car: The path from the Airport to Ribeiro Frio Cottages takes at least 37 minutes by car. After leaving the airport towards Funchal, take the first exit and take the ER207 towards Santo António da Serra. When you reach the end of ER207 you will enter ER102 and keep driving until you reach a crossroad with ER202 to Poiso. Take the ER202 to Poiso until you reach the crossroad with ER103, it is easy to spot since there is a Forest Police station on the right before the crossroad. Go right to Ribeiro Frio until you find our billboard in the left side of the road with Ribeiro Frio Cottages writen on top. If you've reached the trout farm and a restaurant, you've already passed the entrance, turn back until you find a concrete entrance on the right side of the road and a billboard with Ribeiro Frio Cottages writen on top. By bus: Take the aerobus from the airport to Funchal and get off at La Vie bus stop. Take a bus at the La Vie stop to Avenida do Mar, Alfandega, get off at the third bus stop. Go north on Rua 5 de Outubro and take bus number 56, 103 or 138 near Casa Santo António to Ribeiro Frio, get off at the Estalagem DR-Zona 26 bus stop, which is the closest to the private entrance of the houses. In case of doubt call me. Do not rent a weak car, the island has very steep roads. The cottage is in a secluded location and the nearest supermarket is 15 minutes away, so purchase some food before heading to the cottage. You don't need to purchase water unless you need a bottle for hikes. The cottage is in a mountain, so bring some warm clothes and comfortable shoes with a soft sole for extra grip. Also some walking sticks and a flash-light if you plan to do some hikes. To close the cottage door, you pull the handle up and turn the key.
