The village is small with a pretty harbour historic early settlement in the 1840s and originally maori..then french and English. I50 years later its been discovered by the cruise ship industry as a stopover and not quite so quaint or so French! But the waterfront restaurants are still better than most and the dolphins and seals and penguins are still here , and the two local vineyards offer good wine . The superb walktracks criss cross all over the valleys high and low and the commercial boat trips kayakng paddle boarding and dolphin swimming are all super quality.. Guests also have access to our private boat shed in the harbour 15 minutes drive away available for guests on longer stays . walking is an Akaroa passion and pasttime over tracks that have linked the farms since the first settlers arrived ..there are bikes to hire and a taxi at times...put your hand up ..someone will pick you up and give you a lift ! they need to know themselves and what they like doing ...perhaps enjoy the sweet air and the birds waking up at dawn in this heavily wooded area. and the sky .. especially the night sky. With no street lights the stars are so very clear ...we are getting a telescope very soon ...we just cant work out where to put it !8
