Lodge House at the foot of the Quantock Hills

The Gables is one of the original gate houses to Quantock Lodge, and has been in our family for 3 generations. It’s positioned on the start of a beautiful tree lined coach road, that leads up to the Quantock Hills. Sitting in a decent sized garden, it’s the perfect get away. All spaces are furnished with a mixture of new and antique furniture and art. Downstairs there is a comfortable sitting room with huge sofa as well as a further two seater sofa . A small sun room leading from this room works well as an office space. There is a further snug with three seater sofa and log burner off the kitchen and dining area. Both the sitting room a snug have large TVs. The kitchen/dining/snug is an open plan L shape for easy living. The dining area also houses the Rayburn which is oil fired and heats the water, central heating and is your cooker. This will be set on a timer and you can add time if you need. Simply push +1 hour and it will start up. You should have plenty of hot water but you can flick the switch in the airing cupboard for more hot water if you need. PLEASE turn it off again if you do. The kitchen is long with a pantry at the end and two under-counter fridges. There is a dishwasher in the kitchen. A back kitchen utility room houses a very rural toilet! And a washing machine and tumble dryer. It is very basic. But here you can find extra garden chairs and a freezer which you’re welcome to use. Ice trays etc. Upstairs there are three large double bedrooms and a bathroom with a shower cubical as well as a bath. This is our home so we ask that you are respectful of it. But it’s yours entirely for the duration of your stay. Available for questions. The house is nestled into the foot of the Quantock Hills so endless mountain biking and walking possibilities. Triscombe Stone for walking. SUPPLIES Spaxton Community stores which is run by volunteers is great for essentials and has a post office. Wonderful bread on a Wednesday. Blackmore Farm is a local cafe eatery. They do BBQ lunches on the weekends. Also local supplies and fresh local milk. EATERIES Kitchen at Quantock Lakes (Email hidden by Airbnb) eat in or take away breakfast and lunch. Foxy Bean at Adscombe open Wed- Sun 10-4. Coffee, cakes and lunch. The Lamb Pub in Spaxton is renowned for its pies. Do book though. The Hood pub at Kilve is also great for food with a good beer garden. The Field Bakery at Gothelny Farm : On Saturdays 8am-12pm or until they sell out. For coffee, fantastic bread and treats. Can recommend the cinnamon bun. If you’re lucky they may invite you to see the piglets. Dunster castle and village is well worth a visit. As is the Jurassic coast for fossil hunting at Kilve. Great for biking both on and off road. Hiking or gentle strolls. Need a car if you want to get around really. But you could train and taxi and just stay remotely. All super markets deliver. Taunton Station is a 20 min drive Train from London Paddington is 1 hr 45. There are local taxi companies Make use of the beautiful garden. It’s a perfect spot for lazy summer lunches after walks with friends and family. You may encounter my father, John in the vegetable garden if you venture that way. Please do wait to be offered before taking vegetables. Our gardener comes on a Wednesday morning his name is Matthew. The Apple House which is in the grounds of The Gables is a full time rental with a lovely tenant please be respectful regarding noise and do say Hi over the fence. The house Is on a working farm. It is very important that you do not venture into the farm yard where heavy machinery operates. If you do so this is at your own risk. No need to though. There are beautiful walks all around.
