Curlew Cottage
Curlew Cottage is a charming well appointed two bedroom home at the Northern end of the island. It's just a 2 minute walk to either Norfolk or Morwong Beach. The home is set in a beautiful native garden in a quiet location with the giant gums of the Melaleuca Forest forming a magnificent backdrop. It’s perfect for couples with young children. Fresh linen & towels are supplied. There are also a variety of bicycles that guests are welcome to use. The Cottage is set opposite wetlands which means there is lots of birdlife and lot of fresh air. It is ground level which really appeals to younger children as they can run in and out and can venture to beach to climb the cotton trees or swim depending on the tides. The island is alive with wildlife. You will see fish jump and when the tides turn children can observe soldier crabs, small fish trapped in tidal pool or trace hermit crab trails. Eagles and kites soar from huge gum trees. The bikes add to the fun. The whole island is a 5 km round trip, mainly shady with walking tracks and beaches galore. The guests hire the entire house and lovely big garden. There is a verandah two sides for lounging and reading. A stereo is there for music with a small collection of CD's. Bring you own or use ours alongside a DVD library offering great variety. Please note we do not have Blue Ray DVD. Also the the DVD is not easy to see as it is built into the TV. The slot for the DVDs can be found on the side of the TV. The Northern end of the island is the quiet end of Coochie as you don't have the ferry and barge traffic comings and goings. Nor, do you have the busy commercial activity of the Coochie Store and the Red Rock Cafe. It takes 15 minutes to walk to the shop or ferry or 3 in a car. On the beach, at our end you also don't have a Paddle Board hire business or Life Savers patrolling the beach. It's therefore , much, much quieter. Walking and the riding Cottage's bicycles are our preferred method of transport when on the island. If you bring a car over however most of the island is easily using its well developed network of sealed roads. To get on and off the island the passenger runs from 6 am to 11 pm at night every half hour. The Barge will also take on walk on passengers. Make sure you have cash for these foot passenger journeys. The cost of the passenger ferry at the time of writing was $5 cash only. This is for a oneway ticket. The Barge for a two way ticket was $60.00. Note : The barge will accept credit card purchases for car transport. Make sure you book the Car Barge well ahead of time especially if it holidays. If you are catching the Passenger Ferry it is cash only. Once you are on Coochie there is limited opportunities for grocery and alcohol shopping. The shop has a limited range of grocery items. Their biggest trade in term of groceries would be in bread and milk. They are essential a takeaway food shop with a few grocery lines. Its a similarly story with alcohol is the Oasis and the Beach Bar only place licensed to sell alcohol, so we suggest you get your home supplies on the mainland and bring them over.
