Sunday School, North Hobart, luxury & history

Previously a Church Hall & dance studio now a private luxury house, near North Hobart’s Restaurant strip. Built 1928 the Sunday School is spacious, open floor plan dining/living area, well equipped kitchen,granite bench & outdoor courtyard. Enjoy the ambience of a renovation with modern comforts yet respecting the building's heritage. Built in 1928 as Sunday School & Kindergarten, later used as a dance studio & recently renovated, the Hall now offers private luxury studio style accommodation. The large main hall has lounge seating, dining table, and desk plus the “bedroom”area which is screened off by a long well-stocked double sided bookcase and a robe. For more casual meals dine at the granite topped island bench in the fully equipped kitchen or relax in the courtyard. There's a Queen size bed and 2 long single beds (with advance notice & for 2+ nights they can be combined to form a king bed) . Please note there are no actual "bedrooms" as such, its large but all under one ceiling. The large living and dining area is warmed by a wonderful gas log fire, extra Dyson heat/cool/airpurifier is also on site. Interior décor is elegant, luxurious and welcoming, the timber floors are scattered with large deep-pile hemp,wool and hide rugs. All lighting is dimmable (yes even the bathroom) for a romantic night in. The kitchen, entry hall, bathroom and powder-room/laundry can be closed off with double doors but the main area is effectively open plan. The main bathroom has a large walk-in shower and deep freestanding bath, overhead heating and heated towel rail. Bathrobes, Hair dryer and GHD provided. Entry is via a separate entry hall, there’s also a second toilet /powder room/ laundry with washing machine and dryer. Detergent provided. Its a couple of minutes walk to the cosmopolitan North Hobart Restaurant strip with galleries, shops and theatre plus pubs, gourmet grocery, restaurants and cafes offering a myriad of cuisine styles. There’s breakfast cafes and a park with playground nearby, the CBD and waterfront are about 15 minutes walk or about $8 by taxi, MONA is 10-15 min drive but the ferry is more fun!. Parking is in the street & there's usually a spot at the front gate. We don't provide or cook breakfast however you will find cereal, milk, tea, coffee etc. ARE provided. A Cot and High Chair are available free of charge but stored unless requested on booking, so do let us know if you need them. In addition to your private courtyard near the entry door, there is also as smaller courtyard on the other side of the building accessed from near the Queen bed, close enough that you can stay in bed and still chat to your partner sitting outside at the table. There's a large entertaining deck with BBQ and pizza oven at the host's home which is the adjacent property (the 1896 Church) . Covid : If you are self-isolating that garden/deck is quite large so you will still be able to use much of it just not the entire area. The Sunday School is a stand-alone building with its own address and own entrance, your host is nearby for support, or to drop off items at your gate however the host accesses the former church from a different street. (hard to explain - the rear of the buildings face each other but are widely separated and able to be gated off if needed). Some days there is a very friendly, safe. non-jumpy, non-barking 9year old dog at the church, she would like you however if you don't like dogs we can close the gate so you would still have The Sunday School's courtyards dog-free. If timing permits and isolation requirements are not valid we like to greet guests on arrival, or you're welcome to use the secure key case. Any further contact is at the guests' request, privacy is assured, however we're friendly and close by if required. North Hobart is a foodies paradise,, nearby Elizabeth Street is an "eating" street with bars, restaurants, cafes, breweries and more... yet nearby the street where the Sunday School is located is a no-thru-road so its relatively quiet. The iconic State Cinema shows mainstream or arthouse movies there are art galleries within walking distance.. Easy (flat for Hobart!) 15 minute stroll to city or waterfront. 15 minute drive to MONA, however the ferry is highly recommended. The Sunday School built 1928 is at the rear of a former church built 1896 but they face different streets so entry is private. North Hobart a hundred years ago was very much a "working class" suburb, its now very sought after as a residential area within walking distance of CBD. The Sunday School is in a street-mix of small houses and workshops, which means the street is usually empty of cars evenings and weekends. Walking distance to the Royal Hobart Hospital. Bus to CBD or suburbs is nearby & runs every 10 mins for most of the day, but a lot of things are in walking distance. To those with cars a note from your host: Being close to town, I often Uber or taxi to the city as the fare is only about $9 often less than hours of city parking. Comfortable, relaxed and luxury interior, ok for a family but remember the main hall is open plan (bathrooms / kitchen etc do close off). High chair and cot are available free of charge, please request cot on reservation. There is no off-street parking but its usually easy to get a street car park right near the gate. Feltham Street is relatively empty of cars evenings and weekends. (please dont park in front of the roller door belonging to our neighbour)
